Are you positive it's a valve and not an exhaust leak? They can sound quite similar...........If you're sure it's a valve problem, you should try a can of GMs upper engine supplement- it's supposed to work wonders!!!!! Another trick I've heard about but never tried is to add a gallon of diesel to your next fill. It's supposed to help lube everything up.

Does the tick happen all the time or only at start-up?

Exhaust leaks can do the same thing- up and down with the revs. Are you sure it's not an exhaust problem?

When you change your oil you can put in 2 quarts of ATF instead of oil. It will clean out your motor really well. Just watch you oil level because you will burn the ATF pretty quickly. Then just replace what isnt there with regular oil.

You have manifolds? I went nuts trying to fix a tick when it turned out to be my manifolds were slightly warped...

How can I miss you if you won't go away? [IMG]

how did you find something like that out? I have never even heard about that happening... I just came back inside and my exhaust looks perfect... the noise is definatly coming from my driverside valve cover... I know cause I slipped head first into my engine bay tryin to listen and think I got some 3rd degree burns cause of it...

I am not sure if this is what you are experiencing but a while back mine was doing something similar. I was using a 20 W 50 engine oil. This caused my liftters to stick and an engine flucsh cured the problem. Ever since I have used 10W 30- exactly what the manual says....

They wouldn't mount up flat and where the edges weren't flush the air was being pushed out and making the sound. My manifolds were 14 years old at this point and pretty beaten on. My friend told me to check this out. It can happen from them being over tightened and simply the age getting to them. Anyhow he took some new thicker gaskets and silicone and put then on there and tightened the bolts and then got some clamps things which he put on there to hold them down. It seemed to work for a long time but then the stuff rattled loose again. I will find the picture of have of it tomorrow and scan it..... I have one and I have to scan other pictures for folks anyhow so might as well do this.....

Adjust them. It's not very hard.
Before you do hit the local dealer and pick up some top end engine cleaner. That stuff is AWSOME. Work van had a stuck valve and the service department was ready to pull the head. The mechanic decided to try the cleaner and it freed it right up. I ran some through my Supra just before I pulled the head praying I had a stuck valve. Unfortunatly I had a burnt valve.
I was VERY impressed ar how well that stuff worked. All the carbon was flaking off and soft. The car didn't get driven but about a mile after I ran it through so I got to see what it really does. You will need to change plugs after you run the stuff.
