I just put 35\" Thornbirds on my NO LIFT 74 Blazer

I just put 35" Thornbirds on my NO LIFT 74 Blazer.

I squeezed them in there. I had to do a little front fender trimming so that I could turn at all. It was quite funny doing a 8 point 90 degree turn out of my parking spot. I bet I pissed alot of people off last night at 9pm with my cut-off wheel and the loud grinding noises. It is quiet hours on campus for finals week. I hope I pass I got on the Deans list last semester, but I haven't done [censored] all this semester. Oh well everything I'm worried about are extra electives and I'll still graduate with or without them.

I digress. I'll put up some pics of before and after sometime soon.

I'm interested in seeing pics, Thornturds are wide tires so you must have had to trim quite a bit if you're going to take it off road.

When I work all the little bugs out of it to the point that I would rely on it then yes, I'll do some trail driving. I don't however want to be 40 miles away from any main road in Alaska and have it crap out on me. At this point I want to get it to that reliablity stage. As far as the tires are it doesn't have too much clearance from the fenders, so I think I'm going to put on a body lift until I can afford new springs all the way around. It has the chevy sag (off-center too).

I have gone through the carb and intake a little
I have re-done the entire cooling system and replace all the parts.
I want to get the truck up to where I can buy new modification parts instead of replacing just the ones that are broken. I'm dreaming right?

If your truck is like most of the trucks here it's not a dream...you just have to make sure that every repair is done with the best parts you can afford. That way you won't end up having to make the same repairs over and over again which would slow down the process.

On that note when you're about to repair or modify anything do a bit of research here and see what has worked really well for others. I've saved myself a ton of $$ and aggravation by doing just that.

Fixing something half-assed is a great way to get off the trail if needed, but it's not a good plan if you want your truck to 'get better' and be more reliable.

Thanks for the reply Rene, yeah I definatly agree. This is my budget built truck, but they are good quality parts that I am building it with.

Thanks,

PS: how do I change the stranger title under my name?

the lift isn't as expensive as you'd think if you have access to a few tools and slightly more mechanical ability than a trained chimp. You can do the famous shackle flip in the rear for a free 4" approx lift, then just pick up a front kit from somewhere like ORD. They even have a shackle flip kit you can use but to me it seemed pricey as I can just hack the shackle hangers I have and weld in reinforcement if needed. But for someone without a welder or cutting torch it is an option.

Aww, c'mon Rene, you know how wonderful Thornbirds are. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

They're so cool looking in the wide sizes! It's too bad they don't work!

I understand the sentiment regarding Stuckbirds...but the reply was rude regardless./forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Maybe he got them cheap, maybe he bought them because someone recomended them...the fact is they're on the truck now and nowhere did I see him ask for opinions about his tire choice.

Yeah, that's true. They are cool looking though, although they ride rough and are loud. And we know how well stuckbirds work. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: I just put 35\" Thornbirds on my NO LIFT 74 Blazer

Yeah, Rene's got my back. And I did get them cheap, like I said, this is a budget build. I really do like the way they look too. As far as cheap goes this will explain. I got them on E-bay for $525.00 tires and American Racing AR-39 rims mounted. Not bad for Stuckbird prices with rims. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The shipping killed me though, Bought from Mass. shiped to Alaska, but it was still a lot less than any new tire comparable.

Don't worry about hurting my feelings, I have a thick skin.

Later Guys,

For that price you could always break out the grooving iron and make em more capable...

[/ QUOTE ] I agree... I'm running 32" Mud Kings w/ no lift and open 10 bolt diff's. But I still get out and play w/ my friends who have 36" and 40" swampers (they get to pull me out of the mud /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif)

The more I mess with this picture in Photoshop, the more that I'm convinced that it could be made into a real nice tire... Here's a pretty tame one that would still probably wear pretty well on the street. As well as a Thornturd could wear, that is...
