Saw a TV show mention this guy (I think it was the same guy). I'm sure some of the Arizona members will know if'n it's all true! I hope it is and it spreads!

    SHERIFF ARPAIO

To those of you not familiar with Joe Arpaio, he is the Maricopa Arizona
county sheriff and he keeps getting elected over and over.

This is one of the reasons why:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their
weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and
    city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for
    discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order
that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again only
let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot
it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton.
If you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into
    the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he
replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the
inmates were in his jails in the first place. More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just
set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in
a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been
given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their
bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the
    week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests
and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has
lived in the tents for 1 year. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago
started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not
one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates:
"It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and
they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes,
    so shut your damned mouths!"

I wish i could post a letter my uncle sent me from prison. I don't fel like typin' that much though. But to many of them in prison feels like everybody in there and out here owe them something. I think the punishment needs to deturb the crime from happening agian.

He does talk about the money he saves us, BUT he dont talk about letting his buddy retire to collect his pension, then rehiring him. If Arpaio just ran the jails, he might be alright, but he mismanages money, he is a media whore, uses the Sheriff's dept. to keep his political opponents under surveilance, and generely mismanages his position. I dont hold it against him that he got his arse whipped in a parking lot by a hairdresser :haha: :haha: :haha:
But when he had a guy on the Sheriff's posse that was AWOL from the Marines, [ I believe he used an alias] that tells me he's not running things too well. Hell, he just had three guys escape from tent city. They climbed over the electric fence that was not turned on. :doah: It's like he is a good lead man but a lousy supervisor.

    we have one here..

The sherriff in New Bedford MA is similar to him..he uses the "chain gang" of inmates to paint public buildings, mow lawns in cemetaries, paint stripes in the road, fix up couthouse buildings..only inmates who are "low risk" and those who WANT to volenteer are used-(and no chains are used either, its just an expession!)--he's saved tens of thousands of dollars for the state..

But all the liberal yuppie people ,The ACLU,and others whined so much about their "inhumane" treatment, and how " degrading" it was to the prisoners, and of course all the contractors who normaly got those "gravy train" repair contracts from the state threatened to sue the Sherriffs department..so now many towns refuse to use the prisoners free labor..meanwhile,all the buildings are falling apart....God forbid we treat criminals like prisoners! :screwy: :screwy: --I haven't heard much about that Sherriff lately--he might have been voted out,I'm not sure... --too bad,I wish more were like him..

I love the system , and for it to work , we need an actual COP in that office , not a politician .

For the sentenced inmates , sure , punishment is fine and dandy . But joe blow poor guy who can't make bail , and made a mistake driving home ( not DUI , I hate DUI drivers ) , can't do jack waiting for court .

That's not true. When I was in tent city, we had a tent with full cable tv. We also didn't have to where pink anything. You get to have your own clothes in tent city. 90% of the people in tent city have jobs they go to every day. The tents have giant fans and we smoked all the time.

He does have a few other rackets going though. The vending machines are emptied by the inmates on a daily basis and filled daily too. they bring in around 500k a year for his brother that owns them. the general inmate population NOT in tent city all where uniforms provided by a company owned by joes wife.

SO, in the time I spent there, I ate a LOT of candy, smoked a LOT of ciggerets, and drank a LOT of soda, and watched a LOT of tv. cops was the best thing to watch in there..... everyone trying to see if they made tv yet.
