    I miss posting pic\'s here

Not much we can do I guess...

    The question I have is:

Today I was at a friends workplace and they had this truck in for inspection, he says the owner is thinking about getting rid of it for cheap. I'm interested in uppgrading my 10 bolt rear sometime in the future and wonder if this can be a donor. It's a twinn-wheel truck with a red stripe.... see how the picture would help?

    I have the pictures here at this link : <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.espen88k5.alloffroad.com>http://www.espen88k5.alloffroad.com</font color=red>

If its a dually, becareful to make sure its not a Dana 70... I hear there are problems getting these axles to fit correctly, and they require modifications to get them to fit.

Now that we're on the subject, I'd like to post pics, too. At first I was glad they were gone because they kind of got out of hand, but now I wish they were back.

Aren't pictures that are included in E-Mails using an "image" tag retrieved directly from THAT site? If so, why would it use any bandwidth from Coloradok5.com? Or does the Forum software actually retrieve the Image, store it locally, and then deliver it to the user?

It seems that with the small truck pictures under the Aliases on postings, they are not sent from ColoradoK5...

    Just curious...

I would look for another donor. First, it's a dually, it will take more work to get it to single wheel. Edit: I didn't realize there were more pics [IMG] but the rear is definatly narrow.

I'm toying with the idea of becoming a subscription site, say for 20. bucks a year I could then remove all ad banners and bring back picture upload plus pay for tech articles and such, pay sites are becoming the norm on the internet due to the slump in advertising.

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

I'd be sad to see the free content go to subscription. Maybe the ability to post pics or to have an x.coloradok5.com site should cost something. Additionally maybe a popup banner that goes up to non-members, but paying members get an advertisement free site. Granted both those may prove hard to code but I figured I'd throw in my $0.02.

That's what I thought at first, but you know I am barely making it right now and it's not just me, you are going to see more and more pay sites because the ad revenue is just not there anymore. Think of the advantages - first it would keep only the serious crowd here, it would weed out the "hey I'm drinking beer right now" kind of posts, I could offer more features due to I might have some money to spend. I could get rid of the ad banners at the top of the forums, it would also keep the content non-biased unlike some other sites and magazines that rely on their revenue. Something to think about.

That's how I would do it here also, some stuff would be free but the meat would cost.

Right on Riz, now I just need around 2000-3000 more members to say the same thing. [IMG]

Funny, I use usa.net for my web mail and they are going to a pay site at the end of this month for the same reasons then I turn on the TV to find out NAPSTER is also going to a pay site (I have never been there) trust me the economy is down and for every 1 vender that wants to advertise 100 new 4x4 sites pop up, supply and demand, just not enough advertisers out there.

Yeah, I agree with you on becoming a pay site. I know I'd pay 20 bucks to have this. I shell out quite a few dollars in magazine subscriptions every year to learn something and I know I would do the same to been on this site. Maybe you can throw in one of those nifty round decals to the subscribers? Now that would be a good incentive!!!

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

Certainly this is a topic on which there is much discussion and many ideas to be had. I too would like this site to be free from the burden of advertising. I don't question your integrity nor that of this site, but being ad-supported can be a precarious situation to be in. However, I don't know that there is really anything to be said, positive or negative, about any of the burstnet advertisers. I say this as I have yet to see a 4x4 product advertised on their banner. I don't know whether they are a large source of revenue, but I don't see how they would influence the content of this site. That being said, the advertisers of 4x4 products may be the ones to look at. I don't have the figures on your income and output as far as this site goes so I can't talk monetarily. However, if the goal is to remove companies that may be somehow able to wield undue influence upon the content of this site, then those advertising 4x4 products may be the ones to look at. I don't doubt the integrity of your advertisers but there is always a pressure not to bite the hand that feeds you. That being true, I can't remember any examples of nor imagine any future situations in which someone on this 4x4 site would have something to say about lowermybills.com, simslots.com, casinocentral.com, or any of the other companies advertised in the banner over the forums. I can however recall situations where certain 4x4 parts retailers were recommended, in part, because they were "supporters", meaning advertisers, of this site. As well, those who question certain advertisers have found that their ideas receive a very cold reception.
Additionally, I've always valued this site being free. While some may say this is an indication of my being "cheap" I would counter only by saying that indeed if this site cost money I would pay for a membership. My thriftiness aside, one of the things that I believe attracted many to this site is that it is free. While certainly we could spend hours in the library copying microfiche and then hours more copying pages from ancient 4x4 magazines, we discovered that the money spent on those copies is indeed sometimes saved via a visit here. Furthermore having the content of this site freely available allows those who may become contributing/donating/sticker+shirt-buying members to see what exactly they're getting into. While creating a membership fee may do away with some-odd number of posts like "Hey someone pull my finger quick", I fear it would also create a barrier to those who perhaps have not been here before who want to post something along the lines of an "Alternative shackle flip." If I was in a situation in which I wanted to spread the word about a clearance sale at some 4x retailer or a recall or some other valuable information and encountered a site that wanted to charge me to share that information, then I would feel somewhat put off and that sites members would likely not find out that information and perhaps never hear of it at all.
While I don't want to ask you to do anything you are uncomfortable with and I don't mean to pry into what may be considered your private affairs I believe that this discussion would benefit from everyone having the figures on what percentage of the sites bandwidth, storage, and other fees come from which forums/sections. As well what portions of the sites income come from which advertisers. This would allow myself and others who choose to do so to make more educated suggestions and perhaps help avert the site from financial trouble as well as keep it free to all users.

Additional note for those users that wish to discuss the above mentioned burstnet advertisers. As this is generally recognized as a 4x4 site you may find better and more productive conversation on boards elsewhere. I don't mean to ask you to leave, I only want to suggest that your endeavors may well be more satisfying and fruitful if pursued in other areas separate from this site.

    -Aaron

I'd pay (and have) for just what it is. (except putting the links back on the page- I liked that, kept it simple and quick)

Maybe do it like how it works for the anonymous viewers (unable to reply, or post) and charge for the Members. I'd have no problem with that.

    oh-oh, here we go again.

    Edited.
I think it took me longer to type this, than it took aaron to type that (above)- How funny is that?
