Check the govenor gear. My 700 went south earlier this week and that was one of the things that went. All I had was first gear, my revs would get to about 2500, then jump trying to get into 2nd then stay in 1st.

    Looks like its toast.

its the lil external round cap on the driver side of the tranny, up top, near the rear. You'll need to pry it off IIRC

It's either your servo(governor gear) or it's burning up the clutches one gear at a time. I've never heard of anyone just losing reverse and second before though, usually OD goes then 3rd,2nd,1st then ya use reverse to drive to the tranny shop were you get to spend $1000 on a new 700. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

About time that 3/4 ton Suburban gets a REAL 3/4 ton tranny and transfer case. I'd search for a TH 400/205 if you insist that it be an automatic.

I had a 700R4 once. And only once!!!

I'm pretty sure his Suburban does have a 400 in it. I think he is talking about another truck. I don't see everyones hatred for 700r4's. My truck used to tow a skidloader and trailor daily and never has had a problem with the tranny. I guess I don't treat my truck rough enough.

Dont know if this is the problem, but to adjust the TV cable go here: TV Cable Adjustment. It has some good information about adjusting the TV Cable, and what it does.

Re: i think my 700r4 is toast!!! HELP!! first 700r4 experience

My tranny is kind of doing the same thing. I let a friend borrow it to go camping and he calls me and asks if my tranny has ever slipped before and that the fluid level was really low. It has never given me any problems before. Now, I have no third gear or overdrive. It shifts really hard when going from first to second and then slips really bad in third and eventually downshifts back to second. Any idea's ? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

ok forget the tb400 and 350 swap! The thing that guys don't understand is that you have to rebuild the early 700's RIGHT! The corvette components have to be used to make a strong reliable 700. Any idiot that says he's blown a half a dozen 700's either doesn't know how to rebuild it right or replaced it with some 100,000 mile worn out pick-n-pull 700. If built right a 700 can handle 500hp,now how many of us have more than 500hp,I have close to that in my 85'K5 and I run a professionally built PERFORMANCE 700r4.tb400's are very heavy, no overdrive, high ratio first gear, and the adapter that is needed is $450 from advance adapters. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Yeah, I'm kicking myself for replacing my 700 with a 400. It's neat to know it's bulletproof and all that, but life isn't so good as I cruise down the interstate at 3100 RPM.

HA HA HA!!! Once you've blown your 700R4 you enter a long journey into an empty wallet!!! They are not designed for high-horse applications, if they were they would have been installed behind 454s when they first came on line in 1982. Proper built or not, they WILL blow again, it's just a matter of time!!! Go ahead, keep draining your wallet for 700s!!! HA HA HA!!!!
