The stronger 12-bolt, with an 8 7/8-inch-diameter ring gear, can be found in various 1964-82 GM 1/2- and 3/4-ton front- and rearends.

What a 12bolt front? That`s new one on me. I didn`t think that they ever casted the 12bolt in a front housing. Any one else?

The front is a Dana 44. I don't think there have ever been 12 bolt fronts.

No 12 bolt fronts. The front in an '82 should be a 10 bolt, shouldn't it?

Theres no such thing as a "12 bolt" front. It might HAVE 12 bolts, but it shouldn't be referred to as one.

Alright, I got mad, b/c I never heard of no 12bolts up front, so I ran outside and looked at my D44 (hope my boss didn't see me, but wait, I'm the Boss, just not here at work, but anyway). It only has 10 bolts. Hmmm, maybe GM did make 12bolts up front, but defiately not on a 82' K5. I think someone may have swapped that into your Jimmy. I thought I knew my GM Trucks, but now I guess not. Learn something new everyday.

Who ever counts 12 cover bolts on the front of a GM 4x4 needs to go back to school. Even GM Dana 60 fronts "only" have 10 bolts holding the cover on. Even my 1959 Chevy NAPCO 4x4 3/4 ton truck has only 10 bolts holding the cover on. GM NEVER EVER NEVER had a 12 bolt front end.

I have never heard of a 12-bolt front axle either. Dana 44's or GM 10-bolts were the only option I know of in both 1/2 and 3/4 ton models.

I've never seen or heard of a front GM 12 bolt.

GM 10 and 12 bolts were named that because of the # of diff cover bolts.

Dana 44 and 60 have 10 diff cover bolts.

You might want to count again. You may have the rare and elusive combination of an 11 bolt front and a 13 bolt rear that Chevy used on some heavy duty 3/4 ton Blazers in the 70s. They also have a TH450 tranny, and a gear drive NP206 transfer case. Oh, and seriously, a 12 bolt front axle DOES NOT EXIST. Don't believe everything you read.

    Realsquash,
Yeah, I saw that, but I say, never believe what you read. If they did come with 12bolts up front, then what vehicle did they come out of???? What years???? I'm not trying to start up nothing here, but I'm a bit confused. I know I sound like the Executioner here, but I want hard facts, hahah.
