I use linux. Not worth it unless you like a steep learning curve and ripping your hair out for a year while you learn to use it.

i use nothing but xp and never have any probs. run xp antispy to turn off all the warnings and error reports. i also run behind a router and use avg anti virus and not one virus or any other crap.

as for laptops, i like either sagers, if your going to game on it, or panasonic toughbooks if your going to use it anywhere but in your house.

you can always run linux on another partioin until you learn how to use it. actually think their are more windows friendly versions available.

I see, you don't like Dodge, cappuchino's, yuppies, or Mac's.

I was thinking about a Mac also, but was looking for a more comprehensive and intelligent response.

Macs are an OK alternative to Windoze, but are SEVERLY overpriced for what you get.

I've been using Linux (Xandros 3.0) for a year and a half on my desktop and really like it.... it's rock solid. I can run ~80% of my business on it. The other 20% (graphics and whatever multi-media doesn't work under Linux) I do on my Windows XP Laptop. The reason I don't have Linux installed on my Toshiba Laptop is becuase I've never taken the time to figure out how to configure the wireless network adapater under Linux.

Xandros is as close to a Windows look, feel & functionality as you're gonna get with Linux today. I especially like not having to worry about adware, spyware and viruses, and best of all it's free, so you don't have to worry about activating it, and calling the call center when you format your HDD and have to re-activate.

I greatly dislike all things Microsoft, and have gotten away from relying on their products almost exclusively. Unfortunately, the mainstream just hasn't adopted anything but Windoze yet. It's closer than it's ever been, but MS still has a 90%+ market domination.

I would venture to say that your best bet is a dual-boot PC with a newer user-friendly distro of Linux (such as Xandros or Red Hat) as primary OS (where you'll do most of your web surfing & emailing [read - high-virus/adware risk] and have Windoze as a backup. Some places even custom build PC's exclusively with Linux-friendly hardware, which' you'll never find with any of the Dells, Gateways, HP's.

    Good luck!

I built my computer with linux in mind :)

It's nice if you don't have any odd-ball devices like ipw2200 was for a while (integrated intel wifi on laptops)

Just bought a new HP laptop in Feb... A Pavilion dv5030us. Got it at Circuit City when they were offering an unbelieveable amount of refunds. Ended up only paying about $800 for it. Got close to, if not over, $500 in rebates. And it has XP Media... Love it so far!

There is a slight learning curve going from a PC to a Mac, but it is well worth the time. I have a powerbook and a PC desktop. I built my desktop from the ground up and never had any problems with it (viruses or otherwise).

The only complaint I have about my Mac is the battery, but considering I have had it for a year and use it every day (yes, every day) I would expect the battery to wear out.

As far as functionality, the Mac is very easy to use. I never turn my powerbook off, as it goes to sleep and wakes up without any problems. My wife learned how to use it pretty easily too. It doesnt require drivers to connect to other devices. All in all I am satisfied with my Apple purchase, although the prices did go up recently because of those darn Intel chips.

I like Sony. I got a Sony PCV-RX660 with like XP 1.8GHz Pentium 4 and 80GB like almost 5 years ago. And its held up so good, Ive never turn it off or anything, look at porn, download 1000's of songs and still no problems. Its still real fast, the only thing ive ever do is just clean up old programs and stuff I dont use. We also have a Sony lap top thats like 2 years old, has wireless and it works great. We go through computers alot, but my Sony has held up so good.

Im starting to look for new computers now for when I leave for college in the fall. I dont really like lap tops but I think it will be better for me, so I looking for like the newest computers so it will last me a long time.
