well my rear power window stopped working yesterday. Has anyone ever replaced theirs. Luckily for me it stopped near the top. It lis a pain in the ass when you can't get in the back of your rig! later

Make any weird noises before it stopped? There are a few things that could go wrong...the switch that "tells" the tailgate wiring that the tailgate is in fact closed could be malfunctioning, the window motor could be bad, the tracks for the window could be all crudded up, the switch in the cab could be bad, or the cable could have slipped out of its sheath, so it doesn't spin the motor...you'd hear the motor whining when you tried to roll it up if that was the case.

Pretty easy to troubleshoot, lucky yours is up...get in the truck, pull the tailgate access panel off. I'd first try disconnecting the cable from the motor, and see if the motor will spin. If it doesn't, I'd be checking for voltage at the motor...if voltage, motor is bad, or the ground there is bad. If no voltage, for some reason (perhaps the "closed" switch) the motor is seeing no voltage.

Not sure if the rear window was ever fused, if it was, check for blown fuses. Check for fuses first, its the easiest and cleanest : )

I am thinking it is the motor, Come to think of it, the window rolled super slow before it stopped. But I guess it could be a ground. I will open her up tonight to see what is going on. thanks

Once you get the panel off, take the cable out and run the window down so it is flat ond open. Then you need to open the window, so open the latches on the side of the tailgate to make it think its closed. Use the drill to run the window up again, and now just take out the old motor and put a new one in.

how would i use the drill to run the window up? Also the outside key hole where you can use you key to run the window up and down never worked so maybe I can troubleshoot that too. The guy that owned the truck before me said that he tried to get it to work but couldn't. The key won't even go in the hole.

You can run the window up with a drill because it is a square cable that drives the window regulator. The lock mechanism is a little tough to get out, but definitely worth it to make it work!

mine does the same thing.it stops about 2/3 of the way up.I'm lazy,I get out ,grab the top of the window,
jiggle and lift a bit, then get back in the rig and run the window up the rest of the way. It's even easier when you have someone in the truck to hit the switch for you while you're doin' the jiggle/lift thing, the wife's gettin' pretty good at it.hehehe

Re: if it\'s not one thing it\'s another

A tow hook shot through mine like a bat outa hell, and shattered it to pieces. So, I'm looking for the glass for mine, any ideas on where to get it cheap? I'm not sure about replacing the motor inside the door panel on a K5. I did one years ago on a Jetta door, now that was a pain. I imagine it would be a lot easier on an American made vehicle. Simple wiring, and mounting. Good luck.

The only easy day was yesterday.
Second place is a body bag.

I would check a junkyard for the whole tailgate or just the glass. A friend of mine with a 78 Jimmy had a chain go through his back window. We had another whole tailgate on the truck for 85 bucks the next day. If you do the junkyard thing just check the glass make sure its not chipped or messed up.

Re: if it\'s not one thing it\'s another

I have had to replace the drive cable twice. It gets rusted inside. Motor was good. I shoulda oiled it.
My track is rusted out too...where to get one??? What really bugs me is all the scratches on the glass.
    IMPORTANT:
If you take apart the mechanism BE SURE TO LOCK THE SCISSORS arms FIRST.
Drill a 1/8 hole and put in a screw locking the arms together.
I very nearly cut my finger off...the spring is STRONG. I could not get my finger out and
by luck I had a pry bar within reach to get myself out.

Re: if it\'s not one thing it\'s another

i am sure my track is rusty. my whole tailgate is a rusty mess, luckily it is the only thing that has extremely bad rust on my blazer. this looks like it is turning into a weekend project. next project is my radiator. I am filling her up with coolant every couple of days. leaking pretty bad. It would be a first for me. Anyone changed out their radiator. Is it difficult?

This should give you a step by step on the radiator.
Do a search on tailgate, power window, or the frase: "workes with the dash-switch but not with the key" You'l get plenty of helpfull hints and also some pictures.
