    I\'m getting 11mpg in my 89 Jimmy!HELP!!

I've had my 89 Jimmy for 6 years now. Love it!! I've had a 70 Jimmy, an 82 Blazer and the 89 is my favorite by far. This rig is in excellent shape mechanically and physically, but it gets terrible gas mileage (compared to the 18mph some people are getting) and the throttle is not very responsive. About a year ago I had the catalytic converter removed (no lectures please). This didn't seem to affect the way it runs or the gas mileage (been getting around 11-12 mph since I bought it). I still get a 32 computer code, installed new EGR valve and still no change. Do I have to install a new catalytic converter to keep the sensors from giving me errors?

I'd be thinking O2 sensor needs replacing. As expensive as they can be, you might want to do some testing on it.

Doesn't sound too far off. I have a 90 Jimmy. I get 10-12 in the city and 13-14 on the highway and have since I bought it. However, the engine is shot-it won't maintain idle, a vacuum gauge twitters like a hummingbird, loads up under acceleration, etc. But if yours is running good you should get at least 1-3 pts mpg better than me. Definitely check your O2.

On my 88K5 with a stock 350 I have changed the O2 Sensor a couple of times in the past few years. The best mileage was when leaving Virginia to Maine with 800 pounds in the back was 19 MPG (all highway). Just prior to that move I replaced O2, EGR valve, and a few vacuum lines.

    If it breaks, upgade it.

HAHAHAHA!!! And you think your fuel economy is bad?!?!?! Why dont you get a truck like mine and see how you like the mileage? My 85 K30 with a 454 gets 5-6 mpg whether in the city or not!

EGRs tend to plug up quickly on a poorly running vehicle. It's possible that the EGR code is a symptom and not the cause. How long since you're given it plugs/wires/cap/rotor? How about the O2 like everyone else has suggested? If those parts aren't up to par, you may have too much non-combusted fuel coming out and carboning up the EGR valve. Why not take the valve out and look at it? An EFI truck should run pretty clean.

Just FYI... I'm getting 10 to 11 on bad winter gas here in MN and yucky 3.08 gears. Hopefully will get back to my older TBI truck's milage of 14 or so.

My carbureted Chevys get less than 7 mpg with 350s! They have 5.13s and huge tires, though. http://www.bigerik.coloradoK5.com

I don't see what your complaining about. I've never broken the double digits in mpg.

    Re: I\'m getting 11mpg in my 89 Jimmy!HELP!!

    I get close to 10mpg highway in my '87 with a tired 305, 33's and 3.73 gears, and 700R4.
I paid $25 for a Bosch O2 sensor for mine @ PepGirls. Didn't feel or see much difference, but the old one looked pretty grungy, so I guess it's good that I changed it.

I just Moved from Ohio to Kansas last week and I got 11mpg with the Jimmy full of stuff and pulling a 2500lb trailer, couldn't believe how well it did while towing. I put the little 235 tires back on for the trip so that helped alot. 86,305,700r4,373s
