When I install new gears should I buy an install kit? It about doubles the price of the new gears! Can I inspect my axle to determine this, what do I look for?

    Thanks,

You'll probably need one since the bearings are hard to get off of the carrier without ruining them. Since you're going to hav the thing apart anyways it is a good idea to replace the rest of the bearings too, plus you get a new pinion seal and pinion nut, which should be replaced while you're there. You'll also you'll need shims to set up the gears. So what I'm trying to say is - yes, you need the install kit, and I recommend the Master kit with all of the bearings.
