    It should carry over fine

    BUT

If I were you, I'd back up all files, format, and do a clean install

When I did an upgrade from XP HE to XP Pro everything seem to go well except the system folder named pictures on my desktop. I had (my wife's mostly) 2500 pictures and when I upgrade the system folder was overwritten and all my pictures were deleted.
Better follow Resurrection_Joe's advice and back everything up.

That was MSFT "help" solution to this. It said just use my back up to replace the deleted files. I didn't have a backup and now I am looking for some good deleted files recovery software.

save what you want, reformat....get rid of all the BS....win XP doesn't require a boot disk IIRC...if you have a ton of crap to save, use winzip....free compressed files!

I've talked to my computer guys about it and they said don't upgrade, replace it. If you just upgrade, you will bring all the crap over from 98 and it will constantly mess with your system. Copy all your files (data only) to disks, zip or in my case, another computer hard drive then have a clean install done. If you don't feel good about doing it yourself, have someone do it for you after you save everything. I've been working on my new computer for freekin weeks to move everything, reinstall files, virus protection, networks, wireless and reinstall programs. What a PITA! But it's a bigger pain if you drag a virus or bad program with you from 98.

I only have 5 more computers to clean up ............. I think I should just quit and start drinking more. Good luck Jake. :xmas:

    Sounds painful

I have a system that I set up from experiences when I'd use to run 98.

I partitioned my main 40GB hard drive into halves, one for games and one for programs, so everything that's already on disc from buying it is on one hard drive.

I have a second 60GB internal drive partitioned into various drives for different applications. Art, Works, Backup, Media, Downloads, Other (Read: Boobies). The rather redundant back up partition is for game save files and lists and whatnot. Buddy lists, etc.

Then I have a 80GB external that I just make a folder on for each drive and copy paste all my data.

I'mma have to upgrade my 60GB to 100GB or so soon. If I can crack my external open, I may just move them all up 40/60/80 to 60/80/120

    ANYWAY

the point of this babbling is, I can nuke the main drive and only really have to take the time to reinstall my OS and programs and games. Anything small or freeware I have ind ownloads so it's even faster. PSHWOOWWWW

I though XP may fail like 98 did, but the bastard just WONT QUIT! The only thing it seems to be incompatible with is old Japanese DOS dating sims

    Anyway, organize and back up!

I need a UPS to reall be safe.....

    Oh and just for fun

inda like what I do. I have two 80GB hard drives. The D: drive gets all the music, pics, and misc files that I cannot replace. The OS and related programs that I have discs for get put on the C: drive. More than once I have had to reformat and install XP due to viruses and crap. Oh yeah, save all your internet favorites too! Don't want to be loosin' those!

Definitely format your computer before installing xp. I upgraded from ME and had nothing but problems with my computer. saved everything and installed, now I have never had a problem with xp.... DO NOT, I mean do not ever buy ME that thing is the biggest pile of dung I have ever used. I have a portable hard drive that I keep my backups on.
