I have recently been offered a dana 60 rear out of an old dodge for $400 with new ring & pinion and a Detroit locker. I guess my question is, in this day of 14bolt FF is a dana 60 rear enough? I only plan to run 35's. I figure anything is better than my 10 bolt open diff.

    I am running a D60 rear w/MarkWilliams HighTorque 35spline axel shafts and a DanaPower-Lok & 4.11s w/35x12.50-15SSR Swampers! Seams tuff enough for me!!

I picked mine up for 250 about 6yrs ago....it came out of a late 70's GMC long bed 4x4 P/U

I would check the axle spline count. If it is one of the fine spline models and has the gear ratio you want than $400 sounds like a good deal. Don't forget to figgure in the cost mounts if you are not doing it your self. A 30+ spline D60 will be plenty for 35s. Last time I checked a Detroit for a D60 was more than $400.

I have had a lot of people tell me they can pick up 14 bolt FF's for good money like that, but for some reason they are harder to come buy around me. I have checked junk yards, swap meets, classified adds for months and have come up with zip. As for expensive, the guy I am buying the axle from broke it down like this. $100 for axle complete drum to drum, $200 for brand new detroit locker, $100 for brand new gears. And he is going to install them both at no charge. He got the locker and gears from a mutual friend of ours that bought them both brand new to put in his plow truck, but then sold the truck. Anyway, that is why I am willing to pay a little more.

What about the front, I am sticking with just the 10 bolt (converting to 8 lug of course) is this an Ok axle? What kind of locker/limited slip is recommended if any?

Ya that is a fair price!
I have a D44 front but the 10 is perrty much the same. You can BEEF up your 10 bolt by spending about 800bucks at WARN but alot of folks will say "Just get a D60 front and be done with it"!!
Sup to you a D60 can be anywere from 800(smokin deal and rarly found at this price but not impossable) to 3000+(place like DynaTrac or Boyce ) so..........

Arear Dana 60 is not bad, especially with 35's. You also get about 1" of extra ground clearance when you compare it to the 14 bolt.

D60 is a good axle and if it is what he says it is that's probably a fair price. The upside is the pumpkin on a D60 is smaller than a 14 so you will have better clearence.
Strength wise...14 is on d70 level however a D60 is pretty stout.
The front your in the gray area with strength. Leave it open and be easy with the right foot and it will probably be ok. If you atart snaping shafts going to a better shaft may solve the problem.

d60 is a strong axle...ive seen them run 39s and hold up fine...10 bolts are actually a decent front axle...they are a bit stronger than the dana 44 but not as strong as a dana 60...i just finished my 14 bolt swap and i am leaving my 10 bolt up front...im gonna put in some better shafts and convert to 8 lug and leave it open...
