Is it really a 700R4?

If I am not mistaken, the 700R4 is the only overdrive tranny that was put in K5's, right? On my steering column indicator, it says, "Automatic Overdrive" and no matter what it shifts into OD whenever it feels like it. So what's the deal? Do I have something else, or just a funky shift kit? I have a Sierra Classic, and it looks like it was the plushest they could make 'em back in 82...

Yes, the 700r4 was the only auto overdrive installed in '82-'91 K5s. In 1991 they renamed it the 4L60, but your '82 was the first year for them.

Mines like that too, when the shifter is in 3, it still feels like its going into another gear because of the locking torque converter. Start driving on the highway in 3rd, then shift it into d, itll shift again into overdrive

I may be wrong but i don't think they made the 700r4 till 84. I think you might have one of those th350 with a funky lock up converter that made it like an overdrive. This is just what I heard.

my '82 silverado K5 was made in january of '82 at the flint plant and it does have the 700 in it. when i had it rebuilt by a one of the best rebuild guys here in K.C., i was told by him that not only was 82 the first year for the 700r4's, but that my K5 had one of the first 700's ever built. that really made me happy to hear (NOT), especially since it cost me quite a bit to get fixed with all the upgrades it needed.

i do however, drive it almost exclusively in 3rd because of the constant sluggishness it has in 4th. i attribute that to the weight (5000+ lbs.) and the gears (3.08's). i had a '83 chevy scottsdale pu with a 700 in it and always drove it in 4th. go figure, again it was probably the weight and gears. i do like the tranny though in my K5, it cruises great on the highway.
