I just got a deal on a 79 GMC 1/2 ton today. Its got a 350/465/205 and dana 44/12 bolt. The truck was rolled onto its side and has a bent rear shaft, smashed door and driver side fender.
My question for the experts or anybody else with an opinion is:
How can I tell if the frame is bent?
Just looking at it it looks like the thing is doing the crab walk, but could it just be that the rearend is twisted in its u-bolts/mounts?
Are there some measurements I can take to see if the frame is square?
I want to use the 350/465/205 and would swap in my 44/14ff and lift in the new truck but if the frame is bent I will put the 350/465/205 in my old truck with the 3/4 axles and auto tranny. But I don't want to put axles under a tweaked frame.
How can I tell if the frame is bent?
Which would be easier motor/tranny/case swap or axle swap?
