    are you going to lift to the sky to clear them? what is your plan for them? mud runs only?

    Looking good Todd! Cant wait to get mine. Me and him will both be using it for trail riding and rockcrawling. We are going to try to get away with minimal lift by limiting up travel to keep the 3rd member out of the oil pan. Its untrue that you need to jack a truck way up to put Rockwells underneath it. Well see what it actually takes, but Im guessing it wont be as drastic as some think. But you cant beat strength like this for as cheap as they are (less than a Dana 60 for set of these). The wear parts on them can be had pretty easily and if you run big enough tires driving them on the street isnt really a problem.

    hmmmm....i will be watching the build up with great interest. Each time i spoke of rockwell's those very issues came up "3rd memeber-this, pinion brake-that, 6.72 gears-blah". It will be interesting to see how you do it. I found a set of rockwells locally a few months back for $800 in decent shape. but decided against it, because of the afore mention complaints.

    What exactly is involved with the swap? You going to narrow them?

    well, assuming you will run 44" tires, to travel at 65 mph, you will need to turn out 3336 RPM's assuming a 1:1 final drive ratio

    crawl ratio will need help.
    700R + 205 + Rockwells = 40:1
    TH350/TH400 + 205 + Rockwells = ~33:1

    unless you have a 465:
    465 + 205 + Rockwells = 86:1

    the ultimate set up would be:

    465 + Doubler with 3:1 gear set + Rockwells = 264:1 /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

    plus with the selectibility of the doubler, you could run anything. With the 6.72 gearing, mud runs could be made in 2nd and 3rd gear, crawling in 6:1 and trail rides in 2:1

    (note: converter slip to accounted for. comparitive integrity would be lost.)

    Lot's of very pimpy possibilities.

    I forsee an Atlas or Doubler in your future /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

    I saw a dude that used unimog axles in a K5 and those things have like 7 something to 1 gearing. What he did was pull a MacGyver on his T-Case and used it to reduce the gearing. Sort of halfer instead of a doubler /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif. I wish I could remember the particulars. You could have 6.7:1 for playing and cut that ratio way down for highway use. 3:1s one though would be a pain to get rolling with though /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

    I have a 465, he has a 700r4 I believe. I will be running 46" Michelins. My rig is going to be trailered, so Im not too concerned about highway driving. I beieve Todd will still be driving it to trails, but he can tell you more later when hes back online.

    Bryce (bryguy, IIRC) was the one to do that in The Hulk. He competed in last years TTC. We reverse mounted a 203 box and machined some part (its name escapes me) to oil the box better thus keeping it cool at high way speeds.

    Thanks for all the interest guys. I'll try to document most of the BS that's gonna be involved. Like Tyler said, Rockwells with minimal lift is the plan....just limiting up travel. No mud, I try to avoid mud anymore....after that unpleasant experience in the "Toilet Bowl" @ Potosi!

    I'm not re-inventing the wheel here- it's been done before- (and done well by Steve Sharp of Oklahoma). I just flatass got tired of repairing D44/10 bolt stuff. For the price, Rockwells cannot be beat. When you shave/replace the bottom pan of a RW, you get the ground clearance of a D44...not too bad for a 2.5 ton axle!
    I happened to "luck" into a set of RW front axles for a very reasonable cost. It's gonna be a challenge setting up the wheels, steering, suspension, shafts, etc....but I enjoy it....I have to. I would go broke paying someone else to do it! Oh and Jeff, thanks for the pic reminding me of WHY I'm doing this!

    Here is some pics of Steve Sharps Frame Stub job prior to installing coils front and rear. See, its not too hard to install rockwells in a K5!

    He stubbed the frame because his rig actually started life as a 2wd. The frame just wasnt up to par so he stubbed it. He ran for years with the factory frame and Rockwells.
