    Hey all -- I recently replaced the tranny filter on my 700R4 ... when I pulled the pan I noticed lots of wires, solenoids, etc right there on the bottom of the tranny. I have a TV cable that's hooked up to the plunger dealie in the tranny and the filter for a 700r4 fit as well as the new pan gasket (16 bolts, squareish) .

    Is this 700R4 standard or do I have some other type or newer tranny? BTW, I have 2 switches "attached" to the brake pedal ... one is obviously the brake lights and I think the other is for no-op cruise ... but could that be for the lockup on a newer ####E tranny? Also -- I seem to have 5 forward gears! (although unverified with a tach, I can count shifts to 5th and the RPMs seem to agree)

    What the hell do I have there?

    Thats a 700r4. The 5th one you are feeling is the torque converter is locking up, not shifting into another gear. All of them do that with the lock up converter.

    yeah -- but I think I'm getting that extra shift or the lockup in 1st gear ... on an 87 ... I thought that was before the newfangled electronic trannies.

    700r4 trannys are eloectronic. The only difference between the 700r4 and the 460LE is that the 460LE uses an electric speedometer, and the 700r4 uses mechanical speedo. Also the 460LE is shifted by the computer, and the lock up is electronic not vacuum operated. Most of the internals are the same

    It isn't actually a 700r4 in your '90 model, it is a 4L60. The 4L60E is the electronically controlled version.

    '85 K5 : Run it til it breaks, then fix it and go again!

    According to the Spec section, the 4L60 was introduced in '91. My '90 Jimmy has an electronic spedometer.

    4L60 = 700R4, both are identical
    4L60E = Electronically shifted tranny that is otherwise identical.

    None of our trannies have speedometers, they're in the transfer case.

    i sense tension. actually, niether my trans, nor my trnsfr case have a speedo, but the swim team does, and while im on that subject, how come the mens swim racing bathing suits are much more erotic than the women's, that's just not fair.

    I know for a fact that my 90 has a 700R4.......The TV cable controls shifting...not the speedo...The 4L60 oil pan is shaped differently the the 700R4 also

    the 16 bolts and a square pan is a good way to identify the 700R4
