How much do things cost at a junkyard? There is a place in town saying they are having 1/2 off. I need to know what the reguar price is so I don't get jipped. I believe it is pick and pull. You pull everything.

Here is a list of what I need for a 76 truck.
    Door pannels/armrest
    Passenger door
    headliner molding
    dash bezel

More stuff I could possibly use
    Rear Chrome bumper
    87 and up springs
    mirrors
    ac compressor
    ac line
    carpet
    hood
good bed (mine is o.k. but needs a little body work)

    Thanks

It depends on the yard, mostly. I've been to one where I went with a friend getting parts for his girlfriends Volvo that she crashed into a fire hydrant, and we got a fender, bumper, core support, the piece that the hood latches to, an air filter box, both headlight bezels, and the grille all for $20, and we thought it would be a lot more. Chances are, the interior parts you find there will be trashed. I have never seen any good ones, and what you have is probably better that what is there, but there are exceptions.

well when i go to the junkyard i know what i am going to spend and the guys runnign it dont know anything so i go in and say "i will give you X ammount for this part" and they go "ok" if they argue give them an explanation.
my friend saw a wrecked 80 k5 bashed in the front and rear and the guy said when it had and engine that he would sell it for 1000$ but then he left and came back and someone bought the engine and rear axle, so he offered the guy 200$ for the blazer w/ PERFECT inside. the only hard part was putting a blazer w/out a rear axle on a trailer.....

Well first off never go in looking like a sucker. Some yards will let you pull small parts yourself and they will usualy give best deals. On little stuff it best to pull the parts throw them on the counter pocket about a dozen little things like rare trims screws switches etc. and offer low. NEVER SHOW CASH!. It's best to have like $20 in a front pocket and the rest in another pocket. Interrior trim peices they really don't care about. you could probably pull ceiling trim some other small parts offer the guy $15 and they will take it or make you a counter offer of $30 and end up paying 20-25 bucks. It's the barter sytem on stuff like that.
They make their money off the big stuff like Axles, Engine and tranny's. If it's good it's usualy pulled and shelved. Engines go for about $800-1000 if they are common like 350's and low miles. Tranny's $300-500. Usualy if you get there before the engine is pulled you can get them to throw in the FI if it's equiped but fair warning...they don't care about harness and you need to pull the harness an computer before they yank the motor. Most places will hack the harness hoses and pull it accessories and all and sell it as a complet unit. Some yards will pull that stuff for you but you need to tell them upfront you want it. If you do buy something like that you need to know the year of the vehicle and exactly what it came out of. That way you can find correct diagrams and know what year parts to ask for later on down the road for repairs.
I have made some awsome deals. I scored a complete Crate with about 10k on the clock for $850. It was COMPLETE down to the carb, pumps starter Etc. I sold of the carb for $100. I ended up using the power steering pump to replace one that was going south. It had a high amp alternator that out rated the one on the truck it went into. It even had a 6 month old A/C compressor! There was a sticker where it had been converted to 134 with the date on the core suport.
I got a engine for my Supra the same way. 50K on it for $700. Alternator, A/C compressor and starter still bolted to it. You can keep stuff like that as spares or sell it and make some cash back like I did with the Carb.
I got to know a yard owner when I did some work for him and I swear that guy would let me roll out with a wheel barrow full of parts and only charge me $25 each time. I scored a near perfect dash for my 70 LeMans with cluster bezels heater controlls and fuse box for $25. It was going to cost me $400 plus shipping to get the dash remolded. When the wife and I were dating the steering colum shorted out in her car. Had the headlight switches turn signals and cruise control in it..$25.
Deals can be had, you just need to haggle and be prepared to walk. Hay if you only feel someting is worth $20 and the guy won't come off the price tell him sorry only got $20, hold it up, and I really don't feel it's worth more and if he calls the bluff and doesn't take the $20 start walking. About 90% of the time they take it. I got a PTO that way. I was ready to spend $40 Offered him $30 he came back with $60. Held up $40 said "it's all I got" He said $50 I said sorry like I said all I got stuffed it back in my pocket and started for the door he stopped me about 2 steps and took it. Those PTO drives are over $100 new and this one had almost 0 wear.
The rule is with used it's worth less than half. NEVER give more than that. most of the time you can get it for 25% of new on little junk

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to head down to the yard this morning. Sounds like I'll need to be careful. I've looked up the new prices for this stuff and unless it is in excellent condition I won't pay more than 25-50%.

You boys have been a ton of help.

what a deal! Yeah with the price of steel so low right now they got more off that tub selling it to you than they would have crushing it. that tub melted down was worth maybe $50 and they would have had to strip some of the stuff out. Leaving the top on is surprising though...guy must have been in a good mood.

always bring cash. they wont make deals with credit cards. plus most of these people will not charge tax on a cash sale. and always make sure you have the right peice and it doesnt have any unaceptable defects. a guy once tried to sell me a bent front drive shaft.

Well, I went Saturday and picked up some parts. They had about 8 73-80 trucks and 5 blazers. Most stuff was aready stripped out. I was able to find the following though.

    Bumper Braces
    Instrument Lens
    AC hose
    Jack
    Radiator overflow cap
    Windshield Washer cap
    Shift boot

In all I got about $185 worth of stuff for $20. Not bad. If i would have had my LMC catalog I would have got a lot more, like guages and and dash emblems. I didn't realize how expensive they were. Oh well, next time I guess. Thanks for all of the tips and help.

I'm definately going back. It was acctually kind of fun. They had two trucks with the stock tow hooks. I was going to pull them but it was only about 30 degrees and I didn't feel like freezing my butt off!

Doh!! I think I just became a junkyard junkie!

(Insert Tim Allen grunts here) Toad is hooked! It's like crack, once you start, you just can't stop! Going to the junkyard is the motorhead equivalent to a woman's day at the shopping mall. [IMG] I LOVE wandering through and seeing what kind of neat stuff I can find.

Hey Grim-I used your method of haggling the other day and got a 5x9 trailer for $55, and the wheels and tires for $16. They were asking $100 for the trailer. This definately works.

Most junkyards around me suck! Most of the time the people that work there don't speak English, or they don't have any teeth so you can't understand them!
