I use a program called "Xastir" but it's mostly for amateur radio. Delorme makes pretty good mapping software for navigation. They have street versions and Topo versions. The Topo maps are generally more expensive.

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal on that etrex. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I may be wrong but I don't think the basic Etrex is map capable. I picked up the Etrex Legend which is supposedly the cheapest mapping one.

Congrats, and that is a good price! I bought a new Legend for $150 on eBay and I'm happy. I use TopoFusion . The demo version is free /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. I have the full version now. We also have done some geocaching. Have fun!

congrats, I have the green one, I think its one below the top one, but Im not certain anymore. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Its a very nice unit, they all work the same. The one you have should be the updated version (the first ones werent as accurate). The second generation WAAS (IIRC) is a lot more accurate, within 30 feet usually.

In terms of maps, I use Mapsend Topo. It works pretty well, and allows you to upload your coordinates. Some of the other programs these guys listed seem light ages ahead of what I have...
