So, does that mean the shipbuilding is on hold? Or will they just find personnal when they're ready?

    ?????

    Not sure what you mean.

I am on shore duty and the job that I do as well as my command is being absorbed into a shipyard and will be performed by civilians. Apparently it is cheaper in the long run that way. I will still be active duty I am just going to be rotating to a Carrier 2 years early:( .

I do not think any shipbuilding is going to stop. Of the total defense budget about 55% is for pay and entitlements as well as retirement only about 20% is for procurment, R&D of new toys, and repair of existing toys. If you can get people to quit rather than retire you save money in the long run (no pention, no medical, etc.)

I am not bitter just kinda surprised. I will go and do as I am told and when I retire I will get a paycheck every month and medical and all that good stuff all to sit on my ass:D .

As a U.S. Navy reject (hearing) I envy people who serve the Navy.

    And greatly appreciate you serving.

Man, I would have been in 24 years this year (assuming I made Chief)!

Yepper. But a Nuclear Trained officer can only go to sea on a Nuke:( . So for me to stay in San Diego I have to go to 1 of the 2 Carriers here. No LPDs for me.

I was enlisted for 10 1/2 years before my commission and made it up to Chief. I feel that me making Chief at such an early time helped me get selected as an LDO.

    Now dumb question:
What the difference between a non-nuke and a nuke officer?

Nuke officers are trained in the operation and maintenance of Naval Nuclear Power Plants. I.E. The heat source for steam for all of our submarines and a majority of our Aircraft Carriers. Non-nuke officers are not therefore they cannot do anything in the Engine rooms for Carriers and cannot be on Submarines at all. Well except for Tridents they have 1 non-nuke CWO that is the AWEPS for the missles.

On a Fast Attack Submarine all of the officers with the exception of the Supply Officer are nuclear trained and the CHOP(supply officer) does not drive the ship or stand any watch he only orders food and parts and handles the ships money.

    Wow.

My dad's last duty station was the sub base in Point Loma.
That's how we ended up in San Diego from CINLANTFLT(sp?), Norfolk, VA.

That is where I work now I am at the Submarine Repair Activity. I am the Quality Assurance Officer there. You can be a non nuke and work at the base. As a matter of fact the base staff is almost exclusively non-nuclear. Kinda wierd

Nuclear officers only make up about 1% of all officers in the Navy and Nuclear LDOs and CWOs are probably 1% of that or .01% of the total officers in the Navy.

My dad retired from the Navy '80.

His last sub was the U.S.S. Haddo SSN 604.

The last of that class sub retired in '89 I believe.

Old 594 class Technically the last one was in 1999 if you do not count the Pogy which decomed in 2004.

Either way those were old cramped boats. Not like WWII guys but nothing like the "Cadillacs" we ride around in Today.

  to your Dad:bow:  Cold War Veterans are crazy sometimes with the **** they did:eek1:

    Thanks.

    You're right.

And the Haddo was decommed in '91.

My dad was also on the U.S.S. Lapon SSN 661.
