Have located an 84 K30 crew cab diesel automatic. Trans is shot, been sitting 2 years and they want $1500 for it. Body is fair, no rust but some dent on pickup box. Interior so so. Is it worth giving it a better look at. Drive by it everyday and finally stopped to see about it. Couldn't see under it well enough to tell which TC it has. Tires are flat and weeds everywhere. Seems the axles are worth that. D60 & 14BFF for sure. Have considered shortening the frame & adding a short box with a topper for the Sub look, for a replacement for towing. Am I loosing it?

    No, you're not losing it.

Go see if they would take less for it since its been sitting there for awhile. Who knows? Maybe get it for way cheaper. [IMG]

Wished I could try to get that or something like that. Wouldnt mind having a crew cab to haul the family with. [IMG]

The other day I saw an old man putting down the road in a DRW K30 pulling some farm thing behind him at about 20 mph. I was so mad, what a waste of a Dana 60 & 70. He'll never understand what we'd do around here for one of those where there just aren't Dana 60s anywhere.

I read your profile and I see that you have an NV 4500, how much work was that?

84 Chevy K10: Putting in the NV4500 was a piece of cake, but my truck was originally a SM465 & hyd. clutch set up. I bought the correct bellhousing from Advance Adapters for my NV4500 and their J**p slave cylinder. Everything bolted together and fit as well as stock. My NP208 bolted right up to the 4500, crossmember remained in stock location & engine dropped on mounts correctly. I did have to move hole for shift tower back about 3-4". I welded in new sheet metal to cover hole and cut a new hole for 4500 shift tower. Shifter for 208 was moved back about 2" & shift rod adjusted accordingly. I used 95 chevy 5 speed truck shift boot and trim ring as that was the year of my NV4500 which I bought new from Sallee Chevrolet. See pictures for how it all looks. Most people think it's stock. Trashed the 208 shift trim ring due to conflict with my Tuffy security console.

God that would be a dream come true to have an NV 4500 in my truck! How much did it cost? My truck has an automatic now but with a donor truck, the clutch setup can't be that bad.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I've been building trucks for 30+ years and I learn something every time I start a new project. Always trying to build the perfect truck for me. Never seem to be happy with the present one. Am I an addict or what? Now looking at building either a crew cab K30 with a short box & topper or a k30 sub, either one would be set up for heavy towing of my travel trailer to my favorite fishing spots. Need something that allows me to get offroad & into some hidden fishing holes. Plus, it MUST be BULLETPROOF. I can't build any other way.

I bought the NV4500 2 years ago from Sallee Chevrolet for $1800 delivered in Bellingham, Washington. The bellhousing & slave cost about $400, new hyd. hose to slave another $15. If you have a donar truck, it'll help a bunch but you must have a new bellhousing to bolt up the trans. Figure $2500 to do the job. I had also bought a Chevy crate 350/300 engine that I installed at the same time. I ran the 350/300 for 11-12,000 miles & pulled it because it just wasn't strong enough for my tastes. I had a 383 built that has done a fine job but I'm now looking at needing more room to haul grand kids fishing and keep wife happy with a better ride & more power. Always something>

Two of my friends have built 2wd short box crew-cab trucks. One put 4 leather captains chairs from new truck in it. It was sold and the guy added dually fenders and wheels, It was in truckin last year. My other friend is still building his 87. It has a turbo-charged 350, very cool looking trucks

    Good luck

If I ever do it, no matter where I have to drive, I'm going to have you do it. I don't have $3k right now, I'm only 17, but one day I will, and I want an NV 4500 BAD. I won't settle for an SM 465. I must have an NV 4500.

too bad you're so far away, I'd come pick it up. I currently have a thing for crew cabs. I'm thinking shortbed, or maybe even a short flatbed. I'm looking for about 140-150" wheelbase, and some usable bed space, with a 5th wheel hitch available. Plus I figure with a flatbed I can drag it in the tight stuff if I need to. But really with my K5, why beat the crewcab. except when it's 105F outside and the air conditioner is nice to have.

Stephen, you have the same idea I have. Seem the crew cab would fit my needs to haul additional passengers and a short box or flatbed would allow for some serious towing if need be. I'm meeting with the owner of the crew cab & hope to do some serious bargaining with him. Seems like the logical choice would be big block power with an NV4500 & 205. Axles are already what I need. Hope there 4'10's. Will let everyone know how it turns out.

Anyone thought of a NP540GO 5 speed tranny? About twice the strength of an NV4500 and not much bigger. Oh, BTW, the 1st gear ratio is in the low 6:1s and overdrive is 0.82:1. These were used in 1.5-2.5 ton GM trucks used with big block Chevy engines. I picked one up at Pick-A-Part on 1/2 price day for $56. Course, mounting it to a married transfer case is a different story...but I have a divorced NP205 transfer that I picked up for $100. Now to fit it all under my crewcab...at least I won't have to worry about front driveline angles!!

My last 3 trucks were all built for heavy towing & offroading to fishing sites. I generally find some sort of trail to follow and don't need the offroad capabilities of a rock crawler or mud bogger, but do need strong drivetrain and power with good gear spacing for pulling the long grades of western U.S. & Canada. Have been thinking of NV4500/205 with a Gear Venders aux transmission for splitting gears. I located a 84 K30 crewcab 454 T400/205 with all good drivetrain but bad body. Picked it up for $1100 & hauling it home next weekend. Will pull all drivetrain for rebuilding precess and cleaning & painting. Looking at shortening frame for short pickup box installation. Found another 84 K30 crewcab diesel but owner wants $1500 & not willing to budge. Cab is pretty good but then I have 2 K30's sitting in my yard, wife will shoot me for sure. Still looking at options.
