I picked up a K30 power steering pump from a 78 K30 at Autozone the other day. Matt over at WTO told me that I'd gain some power by using this K30 pump. Well I'm in the process of swapping it in and the pulley from my K5's stock p/s pump fits too loose onto the K30 pump.

Did the K30's from 78 have a different shank size than pumps from 74 K5's?

First off it should be a hydro boost pump if it's from a 1ton, do you have a hydro boost master cylinder?

Well you have the option of hydro or non-hydro for the 1 ton pumps.

    I obviously got the non-hydro.

I'm just gaing around digging up all kinds of old stuff tonight.

Is it confirmed that a K30 pump is better?

I am running my stock K5 pump with a HB rez. Well it was stock it now has increased flow off idle and increased pressure with the WTO mods. With my Hydro assist and HB it works fine with one pump. As for a K30 pump if you look at kragen the part numbers are the same for the pumps. The part numbers only change with the different resevoirs. Given that I can not see any difference in the pumps pressures.

Some of us were talking and thinking if any stock pump is better than another, maybe it's the hydroboost ones, since they're doing more work.

So if I'm running hydroboost I should make sure my pump is for a hydroboost. Damn! Mine is in bad shape and I thought I could use the one off a 350 I have! PPPPPPLLLLLLLLLTTTTTTTT!:doah::D

    Thanks for the info:bow:

It's only a theory. Tear your pumps apart and see what they look like inside, then we'll know. I was gonna do some research with the GM dealer and see if they're any different.

The mods are controversial, but this link will show you what's in there.

I can probably check this out, I've got the '85-88 parts manual. Kind of curious myself to see how many different steering gear boxes there were. (the internals that is) Oops pump, just caught that.

I odn't know as there was much to be changed in the pump except the valve on the back.

I rebuilt my 350 pump and a HB pump side by side and there is no difference in the pumps themselves. If anything the only difference is the spring pressure for the bypass so the HB pump will build more pressure before recircing. This can be changed by doing the mods in the link David posted. I am running HB and Hydro Assist with a 350 pump with HB rez. I added a seal kit and flowed the orifice and upped the pressure by doing the West Texas Offroad mods. The pumps are the same the Rez and the bypass spring and valve are differenct but those do not come with a new pump only with a pump/rez assembly.

Basically you can use a stock 350 pump for your HB but you need the extra "drain port" in the rez to allow the HB flow back seperater from the Steering box return.
