Key ignition getting hard to turn to \'off\' position

My key ignition swicth is getting hard to turn to the off position. Can I spray it with WD-40? If so, where do I spray it?
What else could I do to loosen that up? /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif
Thanks,

A little lube might help it for awhile. I have a new lock cylinder that you can have if you want. They're kind of a bitch to put in but really should take only about 20 minutes. I bought it for my truck about 3 years ago but it was the wrong style, it's the one that needs a bolt, mine has the little spring loaded pin. I think the bolt one is for later trucks, but I'm not positive...

Right on Evan. I'll take you up on that! Hopefully it'll be the right one. 20 min. installation will become a 2 - 3 hour with my luck! /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Swap the lock cylinder out ASAP. I had one jam solid and couldn't start the truck. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif You'll need a steering wheel puller and a lock plate tool to do the job. Once the lock plate is removed it's pretty easy to change the cylinder. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

There's a steel plate under the steering wheel that has notches in it. It's what locks the wheel in place when the key is in the off position. There's a beefy spring underneath it which makes it damn near impossible to reinstall it without the lock plate tool. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I've got a nice lock plate tool set made by Lisle that I got for around $20 at an auto parts place. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif It makes the job VERY easy. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Hey Chris it's not a hard job at all. I replaced my ignition about 2 months ago. I bought a lock plate removal tool for $13 bucks @ Scott's (4X4HIGH) work. Took me about 15 mins to start to finsh. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Right on everyone... I probably should do it this week end to be on the safe side. Shaggy says he might be able to let me use his puller and hook me up with the cylinder too! How cool is that?!! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Key ignition getting hard to turn to \'off\' position

you know i had a similar problem, but after replacing the key lock switch. I found the ignition switch under the dash right on top off the column to be busted. Mine was ruined because of a electrical short, and it made it hard, even impossiable to turn the key. After taking it apart i can see that it can just wear out to... it was sorta easy to replace and was easy to find at the local parts store..
