    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A UND student was reported missing after she didn't show up for work Saturday night.

Dru Sjodin, 22, last was heard from at about 4 p.m. Saturday, as she was leaving from her job at Victoria's Secret in Columbia Mall.

Sjodin's family is offering a $20,000 reward for her safe return.

UND Police Chief Duane Czapiewski said Sjodin's roommate notified University Police at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday after Sjodin didn't show up for a 9 p.m. shift at her second job at the El Roco.

The case wasn't classified as anything more than a missing person case until Sunday morning, when the Grand Forks Police Department was notified, said city Detective Mike Sholes.

Sholes said as the police department's investigation into Sjodin's disappearance developed, they became more concerned.

"It's not uncommon for people to go missing for a variety of reasons, but certain characteristics of this (case) demand immediate attention," Sholes said.

    Suspicious call

A cell phone call, presumably made shortly before her disappearance, has police and family concerned.

"Around 5 p.m., she was on her cell phone speaking to her boyfriend in the Cities," Sjodin's mother, Linda Walker, said from her home in Pequot Lakes, Minn. "He heard her say 'Oh, my God,' and then the phone went dead."

Sholes said the Grand Forks Police Department is investigating the case as an abduction, most likely sexually motivated.

Sjodin's car was found in a north Columbia Mall parking lot, near J.C. Penney, with the driver's side door locked and the passenger's side door unlocked. The items she had purchased at the mall after work were left either in or around the car, according to Sjodin's mother and friends.

    Call from Fisher

About 8 p.m., Walker said another call from Sjodin's cell phone was made to Sjodin's boyfriend. Sjodin's boyfriend answered the call, but the line was dead.

Sholes said cellular phone information from that call encouraged the police department to focus its search in the Fisher, Minn., area.

Walker said as far as she knows, her daughter doesn't know anyone from that area and would have no reason to be there.

"She's very responsible," Walker said. "This is totally out of character for her."

    The investigation

Sjodin's car was impounded Sunday morning, and immediately, Grand Forks Police began processing the car.

Grand Forks Police said they had no suspects as of Sunday evening. But Sholes said they are looking at prior abduction cases reported to police, as well as files that may have been kept regarding suspicious persons at the mall. Police also are viewing video surveillance tapes from Columbia Mall.

"If the public has any information around the parking lot on the north side of J.C. Penney's at 5 p.m., or the southeast parking lot of old Target; or if any suspicious people approached them at Columbia Mall at any time, we would like to have that information," Sholes said.

At home, Sjodin's mom pleaded for help.

"I just need everybody's help to try to find her," Walker said. "It's the worst nightmare anyone could go through."

    Friends make fliers

Sjodin's friends went to work Sunday, putting up missing person signs throughout the area. They gathered at Sjodin's apartment and began calling fellow friends and students to be on the lookout for her.

Friends say Sjodin was a friendly, outgoing person who is not the type to disappear without telling someone where she was going.

"She's not the type of person that just wouldn't show up," said Ivy Arnesen. "We're just hoping to get some information about her."

    About Sjodin

Sjodin graduated from high school in 2000 in the Pequot Lakes area, and was an honor student and homecoming queen, Walker said. She said Sjodin was hoping to go to Australia this summer and had plans to graduate with a degree in graphic design in August.

Sjodin is 5 feet 5 inches and weighs 130 pounds. She has frosted blond hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing black slacks, black loafers, a pink and purple V-neck blouse, a black blazer style jacket and a small black handbag.

Anyone with information is asked to call University Police at (701) 777-3491 or Grand Forks Police at (701) 787-8000.

Her boyfriend needs a kick in the head. Had he called the police immediatly the odds of her being found would be greatly improved.

Easy man. Hindsight is always 20/20. We dont know the whole story or what their conversations had been like leading up to that day, so dont start pointing fingers at people. That wont help matters. People need to focus on trying to find her, not hypothetical situations that may or may not have helped the situation.

If the CNN report is accurrate and they indeed have the right guy, then you have to ask why a parole board would release a level-3 (whatever) pervert. Since a parole board lets them out they ought to be held accountable too. Either we start a grass roots effort that says "If you set them free and they commit a crime, you are therefore an accomplice and stand trial too" or start filing Civil suits against them for whatever happens to the victims of these creeps. Best I can come up with since public lynchings are outlawed. I just hope they find her safe. Trukman1

I'm liking the idea of a penal (not penile /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif) state, like in "escape from New York". Put all those fawkers together and let them fend for themselves. Grow their own food to live on rather than them sitting in jail for life and letting the taxpayers pay for it

    start rant:

They need stop with pussy ass liberal bullshit, but that guys nuts in a vice and beat him with a bat till tells where she is, thsi country is bullshit the criminals have more rights then the law abiding citizens. I thinkthe death penility is to easy. Why painless deaths, did the people these criminals killed, raped, murdered, robbed, have any thing painless????????? No, these people should be beat to death stoned to death, peeled like an apple and rolled in salt, maybe if people realize that arent going to get put up in the hilton if they get caught they wouldnt do it, and even if they still do, there would be no repeat offenders. And I dont even want to hear the insanity part, if you are that insane, you serve no purpose in life but tying up the resorces of out country, maybe in that case you can be painlessly removed from society.

    end rant

    /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif

really I love this country but prison should be prison not the country club and we not to stop with the bs while this girl may be tied up somewhere dying.

Not trying to sound like an @sshat, but the chances of her being found alive are slim and none. A guy like that knows if he gets caught again he goes up for life. He views women as objects to be toyed with and disposed of. He isn't smart enough not to do it in the first place, but he's stupid enough to kill her and try to make sure nobody EVER finds her. I don't think we should stop looking, but the chance of finder her alive and in a recoverable state diminish astronomically every day. /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I agree. There should be no appeals in iron clad cases. If you are found guilty, you are escorted outside to the firing squad, and have yer balls shot off BEFORE you take one in the head. I also think it should be public. Capital punishment has a way of stopping crime...or at the very least diminishing it. Think about the impression it would make on a young person, seeing a convicted rapist and murder put to death for his crimes. I don't know about you, but it'd sure put a damper on any crazy ideas I might get!

I agree. But, physical pain may not do it for this guy. EVERYONE has a weakness though. I say find it and exploit it. I know there are those that would say we are "lowering ourselves to their standards". To them I say...STFU! They do not play by any rules or standards, but they count on us to. /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif I say we use the same tactics on them. If that's "lowering", then I'm OK with that. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif People have bleeding hearts for sick criminals until they are affected personally. Stupid fawkwads....

i think we should temporarily have our friends the Turks "watch over him", maybe ask a few questions. They seem to have ways of getting the info they want. Few weeks ago they caught an Al Queda guy and the news report said "and he seems to be cooperating with the authorities". yea, Ill bet! bamboo shoots, thumb screws, water tourture etc etc have a way of doing that. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

this guy needs the same treatment. sorta reminds me of the 1st Dirty Harry flick where harry is grinding his heel into the bad guys bullet wound saying 'wheres the girl you scumbag!'.
