My 5 year daughter like to help me sometimes, she losses interest pretty quick though. She loves to run the impact wrench to remove lug nuts though, nice easy job for her. 8 per wheel...make sure to get 'em all!

When having your kids work with you, do you emphasize safety? Such as eye and ear protection, fire hazards, etc?

We may think nothing of it, but with running air tools, hearing protection should be worn. I know that I myself don't bother with it unless I'm using a cutoff wheel or an air drill, mainly because I find long exposure to the high-pitched noise almost deafening. But whenever friends bring younger ones up to the shop, I make sure the kids at least know when to put ear plugs and safety glasses on.

I'm not trying to bash anyone here, just curious if people are trying to teach the "safe" way to do things.

Actually, I like to bust out the grinder and proceed to work naked. Bringing my eye as close as possible to the grinding surface to make sure I'm getting a nice, level surface.

    :haha:

My daughter has her own set of safety glasses, and asks for them when she is messing with a hammer or if I have my goggles on. As for the hearing protection, she uses it when Im grinding, chiseling, or bamming on something. She is pretty safety oriented, for a 7yo anyway. She keeps interest pretty well, I generally give her jobs she can finish quickly just so she doesnt lose interest. It funny cause last night (Christmas eve) she was feeling guilty because she had to go to bed early instead of working on the jimmy.

Hell... if I had a sever year old I'd use him to block the sparks from my body... no real need for him to wear protective stuff, he's just a kid.
