I got a Sony VAIO lap top with XP, probally about 4-5 years old. It still a great computer. But the screen isnt working anymore. When I first turn it on, the sreen is fine, the XP logo start up comes up, but after that it goes out. You can still see screen if you put a flashlight or something to it. Already tried rebooting it, but that didnt work. Any ideas?

Boot into Safe mode (F8) at initial promps. If it boots and you can see the screen all the way through, then it is video drivers that got corrupted or video settings.

You may be locking up at windows bootup as well. Post up on the safe mode reboot.

alright Ill try that, but i plugged a monitor in, and it works fine with a monitor. does that still mean it could be video driver or settings?

the backlight of your LCD is dead.

cheap part if you can find it online, kind of a pain in the nuts to change.

I knew it was a Sony Viao. Mines almost 3 years old. It's been a total nightmare. What a POS. Here's what's been changed and serviced on it.

    2 mother boards
    2 disc drives
    2 batteries
    1 fan

Take it to those jerkoffs that call themselves the geek squad.

I have one more year left on my warranty. I'm gonna send it in again,so Hopefully I will get a new one no questions asked.. Or this focker is going to get set on fire.:p:

Haha thats weird, cuz we have this laptop, a Vaio, and my computer is a desktop Vaio, and they are the 2 best computers we ever had. Also the oldest out of the ones we still have. We have a Dell desktop which is only 2 years old, and that thing sucks. Also have a HP laptop that is a year old and has never been right. Sony has been pretty good for me so far, this is the only problem.

I would think that if this was the case, it would dead all the time. The fact that your video is working until XP starts tells me that there is another issue other than the screen.

Have you tried a safe mode startup with just the laptop screen and no external monitor?

Maybe somone screwed with your contrast settings? The settings wont start til xp starts, it happens alot at work, kids will turn the brightness and contrast all the way down, so when you turn on the computer, you cant see crap until you fix it.
