LEAKY BRAKES!! ?? What is this \'eye\' for?

again, on a 1984 S-10....but probably on others too. Was bleeding the brakes last night and saw some drips coming down from above on the master cylinder. Got to looking and it is coming out of this 'eye'

It appears to be a rubber 'eye'. Why would it leak from there...do I just have to replace that whole dist. block??

    Thanks!

I have never seen anything like that on a stock rig. Any chance that was some sort of tap for a trailer brake system? I can't imagine that on an S10, but you never know.

I have no idea. I just picked it up a while back and just recently swapped everything over from another S-10. Strange huh? I literally looks like an eye. You ever poked the eye on a fish? Thats what it feels like too /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

So anyone know why this thing would be leaking from the 'eye'? Is that to let you know its bad or something?

Also...there is a little nut on the front of the valve...kind of a bleeder. What is this for??

That is part of the proportioning valve (part of the whole combination valve). There is a spring and piston in there that cause less pressure to be sent to the rear brakes. GM drilled a hole in the side of the valve housing to releave extra pressure from building up behind the cylinder if the seals started to leak (which yours has) which would lead to full pressure being sent to the rear brake lines all the time. That rubber 'eye' covers the hole to keep dirt from getting into the hole (the rubber piece comes with a small pin hole in it). Just go to a U-Pull-It and nab one. Might as well get the whole thing. You could also get just the hex shaped part (the prop. valve) that is screwed into the back of the rest of the combo valve.

BTW: I only know this because I cut one open this summer trying to figure out how to disable the stupid thing so I could put in an adjustable one to be able to ballance out the breaking after swapping in some 12" B-body brakes into my s10.
