nah, i THINK i bought it that way. he told me it was loaded with oil, so i was driving in front wheel drive, no rear shaft, and drove at 15mph, 1/4 mile, and then pulled the cover a few days later. there was NO oil. not sure if I did that or if it was like that when i bought it.

Dang, That's a lot of heat! The only times I've seen them do that was with no oil. I cracked a case on a 10 bolt before and lost the fluid. I knew it was making noise but figured it was the bearing. Thought I'd keep driving to work and take it apart over the weekend. Melted and rounded off just like that. The bearings wore out and allowed too much sideways movement on the carrier which left it slipping on the pinion. Found the crack after it locked up on the road.

Looks to me more like someone had welded the spider gears. They are evenly spaced it seems. /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif

Future axle shopping tip: ALWAYS take the cover off and inspect the internals before you buy an axle assembly. Those booger welds on the ring gear would have a sure sign that you needed to keep on shopping. If the owner won't let you take the cover off for inspection, then move along and find another place to buy. /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

Oh yeah... It'll be cheaper to swap in another whole 14-bolt than to fix that one. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Just gears and bearings can set you back around $350. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

But the ring gear doesn't even touch the spider gears, It wouldn't have even mattered if they were welded It wouldn't have changed the way the ring gear melted. Mine melted almost in the same pattern on the 10 bolt.

Re: Let\'s see some drivetrain breakage!

surprisingly the bearings are perfect! races are fine, everything except the r&p, which i found a good deal on ebay, for some temporary gears. spriders are all fine, everything is fine except the ring and pinion. i just finished cleaning my side gears, spiders gears, races, and carrier case, so i know! around here 14FF go for upwards of $400. i'm good to go now!

where can i buy the axle shaft bolts, that bolt it to the drum? (hub bolts?)
