RIFLE — A 20-year-old Parachute man who fell into the Colorado River in Rifle on Tuesday night is believed to have drowned, Rifle Police Chief Daryl Meisner said Wednesday.

The victim and two other men, including his brother, had reportedly floated down the Colorado River from the Silt area on an air bed , Meisner said.

Petersen’s likely drowning, along with that of 53-year-old Les Raleigh Nomandin in a kayaking accident on the Crystal River south of Carbondale on Wednesday, had two things in common: Both men were from the Parachute area, and neither wore a life jacket.

I mean, I feel bad for the guy's family but, really, floating the Colorado on an air matress? You have to expect a group of guy's who hop on an air bed not to have life jackets but the kayaker?

And my first thought was why would you parachute into a river... Let alone why would you parachute with an air matress /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

    Update:

The body of a 30-year-old Parachute man who drowned in the Colorado River was found Friday evening in a sand bar west of Rifle.

Dale Michael Peterson was last seen Tuesday on the Colorado River when he tried to swim out to an air bed he and two other men had used to float from Silt.

A man walking his dog along the river spotted Peterson’s body around 5:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Rifle Police Department.

Authorities said the body was about three miles downstream from where Peterson reportedly drowned. He was not wearing a life jacket.

Garfield County Search and Rescue personnel recovered the body by 8 p.m. Friday.
