This was mine when I was his age (about 3.5yrs). I exhumed it from my Mom's shed under the cover of darkness, tore it down, had the three coats of paint glass beaded off of it (second coat being lead-based--until the mid-ninties, John Deere brand paint contained lead--no kidding), re-assembled it with a wallet-emptying load of new parts, a few coats of current lead-free John Deere brand paint and added some new decals.
After all that, this is what I (soon to be he) ended up with:

I sure hope he likes it because I could have purchased a brand new one (or two) for what I sunk into this one.
I also have the wagon for it, but I haven't finished it yet. I ruined it by overloading the living hell out of it so many times that I had to reconstruct the bottom of it, add structural support and add paint and decals to it. It will be ready by C-day.

That is SO COOL!!! Forget the money. The sentimental value is worth every frickin' penny.

I have all my old steel TONKA trucks. And hopefully one day I can do the same thing to them and give them to a kid of my own.

    Once again. AWESOME JOB MAN!!!

That is awesome. Like everyone else, I think that it will be a little painful at first to stand back and laugh when he treats it like you did.

That's Awesome!! You did a great job restoring 'er!

Just think, 20-25 years from now he'll be in your shoes restoring it to give to his son.:wink1:

I have a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun (you'll shoot your eye out kid!) that my dad got when he was 12 and then gave to me when I was 12. 6 years from now, I will give it to my son when he turns 12.:D

I would have killed for one of those when I was a kid. The implement dealer had on that I would ride everytime I went with Dad to get something. Never did get one of my own. :(

That's a really cool idea for a gift!

Used to have one just like that at the grandparent's house. Drove it around as long as I could remember, it was way older then I am... That thing was awesome. I'm sure he'll love it. Now if we can only retro fit a briggs and straton to it hmm...

Wow!! Thanks for all the kind words.

Yeah, I'll be diggin' it. I figured out the plan that I *intend* to follow and that is: roll the tractor out of the garage and let him get all giddy, then after a few moments show him the wagon for it. That in itself willl be the icing on the cake and the crowning test of his bladder control. He has a serious trailer fetish. He will point out trailers going down the road by type and quantity. He has several toys that have trailers/wagons/implements that can be hooked up and he spends countless hours dragging strange things around behind his toys. It should be a hoot.
I'm not looking forward to the scratches etc, but bah, it happens. The only part that concerns me is that I filled the hood and front grille seam and the extremely rough casting on the hood with some polyester glazing putty. It's not thick, but that is what I can see being damaged the easiest. It's not going to be the first damage (I know what that is going to be), but it will be the most noticable.
Oh well. If he has fun with it, that's all that matters.
