Anybody know for a fact that the Factory GM TBI intake manifolds have a tendency to crack and allow coolant to enter the cylinder(s)??

I have been told by some that this can and has happened.
These were not instances of overheating though.

    Anyone else experience this?

Anyone have any pics of a cracked TBI intake manifold?

I have heard that but I think its mainly in the 93 up era, they have a little different intake (has a groove in the thermostat housing... thats not the problem but those manifolds found after 88 or 93).
It does happen, haven't heard or had it happen to my 87's.
    No pics sorry.

Right, I know it happened to Layne and I'm pretty sure Scott from KC was saying it had happened to him as well. I just wanted some other opinions/testimonials before I rip the intake off of my '87 Burb. I'm losing coolant somewhere and I can't find a leak- anywhere. The other (strange) clue is that I will randomly get a white smoke....but this seems to come and go. Not a drop of coolant in the oil. This is not like any cracked head or blown head gasket I've seen before. I'm wondering if, in fact, my intake is cracked and dropping coolant into the cylinder(s) randomly. I'd hate to pull the intake for nothing tho...

Anybody else see this on a TBI setup??

Layne, if you read this, do you still have your old TBI intake?? Where did it crack??

    Thanks for the info everyone.

    i have a 87 tbi 454
my intake cracked in the (i beleave it's called the plenium)
right below the tbi there was a hair line crack between the two sides of the intake.
my machinest said he see's that all the time.
i also was losing coolent but it turned out i had a bad head gasket and it was sending the coolent out the exhaust.
    don't know if this help's.

I have an 88 and I am slightly loosing coolant also. No leaks or drips that I can see. I also replaced the intake gaskets not too long ago also. There is no noticeable difference in temp cooling, but it leaks down enough just to be annoying.

weird. I had looked over this topic for awhile but after reading everything else on this site I desided to read this one too. and I get to add to it.

My dad has a 90 burb and his has a slow leak of antifreeze too, now I know where it's going,LOL

At the shop i work at we had a truck come in for a warranty head gasket that turned out to be a cracked intake. BTW the truck was a 90 C1500. The intake was cracked and allowing coolant to make its way into the #7 cylinder.

    Interesting, thanks Jason.

Are you guys seeing intermittent white smoke?

I put about 400 miles on my Burb over the weekend. I saw no pattern to the white smoke. Sometimes at startup and sometimes not. Sometimes when it was hot and sometimes cold. Makes no sense to me. I used maybe a 1/2 gal of coolant.

    Layne...?

My manifold cracked between the thermostat housing boss and the number 1 intake runner. I happened during the trek to Colorado. It happened rather quickly though. It managed to drain the radiator before I could shut the truck off. Had to replace the motor.

cracked water passage in the head maybe? causin coolant to leak into the cylinder? Just a guess.
