im looking at getting a newer rig. I have a 76K10 now and am familiar w/ the trannys and t-cases of that era, but not with the ifs trucks. I looking at going w/ a 3/4ton manual. what options in manual tranny and t-case trucks are there. Ive read that most will come w\ a nv4500. Is this a good strong tranny, and what t-cases come with it? anything like a np205 like i got in my rig now? I just want to buy the good components the first time. thanks

If the truck has 8-lugs it will have a NV4500 starting in '92 and a SM465 prior to that. T-case will most likely be the NP241, but the 1-tons came with Borg Warner cases, I'm not sure if the heavier K2500's (big blocks and diesels, and trucks with the 10.5" rear end) did too. It would be fairly easy to ID by looking at the case. If the truck is a light duty 3/4 with 6-lugs the NV4500 would have been an option and standard would have been the Getrag or NV3500 depending on year. My 95 K2500 has the 4500/241. IMO, you can't go wrong with either T-case (neither one is as strong as your 205 though), but I'd hold out for the 4500 if you're getting a manual tranny truck. Auto tranny options were the 4L60(e) and the 4L80e, with the pre '92 3/4 and 1 ton trucks getting the TH400, all with the same T-cases as mentioned above.

OK great, thanks for the input. Is the NP241 t-case part-time? Also is that t-case engaged with a stick or button? I dont like how in the newer vehicles it is all electronic. thanks again

Part time, with a stick. The autotrac equipped trucks had another case (NV253 or something to that effect).
