MSD, this doesn't increase low end torque, but it improves throttle response so it feels like more low end torque and make life a little easier when offroading.

Those 400 small blocks had quite a bit of torque off the showroom floor, compared to most. Anything to help the motor breath easier should help. A good tuned carb, good spark plugs and you should be good to go. I feel your pain. I wish I had more low end grunt.

I'm about to build my 350 in my c-10 for pure torque...
Got the exhaust, headers, mufflers....going with a performer intake, and a new cam.....I hear something around a 268 would make ideal pulling torque in a mild engine....hext will be a throttle body to add to the MSD response...

Ways to improve low end torque:

    shorter rods (SBC 400)
    Low-rise dual plane manifold
    re curve distributor
    small primary headers
    well tuned carb
    open element air cleaner
matched cam (for that matter ALL engine componetns) for desired engine RPM's

if you want low end torque, you don't put a Victor Jr. manifold on a engine with a RV cam.

Nor do you put a stock TBI on a 600HP motor with .500" lift on the cam and 12:1 compression.

Match your engines components for what you want to achieve

Marv, tell us more on this cam advance. I have heard of degreeing in a cam during installation, is that what you did?

Degree-ing the cam is basically just checking the advertised dimensions of the cam with a measurement device (dial indicator) and making sure that there are no "installation" factors that give you false valve timing. But as far as "advancing/retarding" the cam, the rule of /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif is that advancing helps low end torque while retarding helps the volumetric efficiency at faster engine speeds.

My engine is all stock except Vortec heads and a 204/214 Summit cam that's advanced 4*. This is the 3rd small block I've had in the Green thing, and I have to say that I think it's the best performer. The last motor ran a Crane 272 (214/228) straight up, and World Products Torquer (way more $$ than the Vortecs) heads and, although it may have had a little more on the top end, I rarely used it....

Like said earlier make ALL of your components match and make sure your cam grind is of short durration at .050 , as much lift as the profile will allow , and has exceptional cylinder pressure down low .

I like the idea of advancing the cam.... Might have to look into that. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Stroked my 400 to a 415 and set it up for RV/Towing. Lots of drivetrain busting torque, great gas mileage!

Got a 400 smallblock to a 406, Tri-Y Doug Thorley headers are the best mod you can make. Air filter, tuned carb and a cam. I hear cams are a night and day difference in a smallblock, hopefully I'll find out soon. /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif

[/ QUOTE ] I've got a 400. Can you hook up a link to information on the 415 stroker kit ???
