    Magnet-mount antenna ??\'s

Anyone know how a magnet-mount antenna is grounded? I run a Wilson 500 mag-mount. When I use it, I just slap it onto the center of my roof, under the assumption that ALL CB antennas need a good-sized ground plane to operate efficiently/correctly. BUT, the bottom of my ant. is plastic coated. Plastic being an insulator, how is this antenna getting grounded??

Mag Mounts ground through the RF connector on the radio. Some have a handy dandy little ground strap kit, but that applies mostly to 800 mhz stuff.

Ahhh, OK. So do I really need to put the antenna in the center of my roof, or would putting it at the back left corner of the hood work? Right now, I only use it when wheeling; maybe 1/2 mi. radius is the most range I need right now.

On that note, do I really need to get the antenna tuned (SWR) with the way I use it? I have a good CB shop within 15min. of me who can take care of that for me, but if it's not a must, I'd rather save the money for something else. AND on THAT note, should everything be mounted in it's final locations before tuning? Thanks...

Mag mounts will actually work just about anywhere, just long as they have a clear shot. Far as tuning it goes, I never really have tuned them - most mag mounts I've seen actually don't have the capability for it. Far as mounting goes, It really doesn't need mounted before tuning - not unless you are really concerned with having the ability to hear conversations from 3 states away, and be able to talk that far away.

My Wilson 500 mag-mount can be tuned for SWR; the booklet that comes with it explains how. I don't know about others, though.

Depending on how much the shops would charge to tune it, you'd probably do just as well to leave it alone. I've always run them without tuning and thev've worked fine.

my CB has a SWR meter in it, which I generaly check before I use my CB to make sure its still grounded properly ( the problem of having an incorectly installed antena mount) you also want to make sure you have a SWR lower then about 2 or 3... much higher, and you run risk of burning your radio out quickly.
