    I like to do as much work on my own as possible. All I have now is a wimpy "Haynes" manual.

    I'm sure there must be better manuals out there. Could I hear a recommendation. Also would like something w/ details on the axles, transfer case and tranny, too.

    Dealer shop manuals are the way to go. You can find them at swap meets, or on e-bay. Bought from both places shuold be around 10-20 dollars depending on condition for your year.
