I need some help from some one of more mechanical knowledge than me. my father has an '84 cougar that needs the ignition key mechanism replaced. does anyone know how to get it out of the column? he wants me to do it but I'm not sure what you have to do to remove it.

    thanks guys,
    Josh

I've never worked on a cougar before, but I'll try to help all I can. More than likely you're gonna have to take the steering wheel off, and maybe the turn signal cam. There will usually be a set screw or a clip holding in the lock. You'll probably have to remove/loosen the screw or clip, turn the lock with the key (or maybe not) and pull it out. It's really not that hard once you get into the steering column and see what's in the way.
