mid 80\'s 14 bolt ff compare to a late 70\'s

Ok I know gm did a few changes to the mid 80's 14 bolt ff so I want to know if they changed any thing in the pinion and ring gear set ups like the bearing sets or something. because i have a 14 bolt out of a 78 and i want to swap the gears with the onecs out of a mid 80's 14 bolt ff I found so if they did what would it take to make it work? thanks

i just checked the bearing part numbers and they are the same except for the pinion bearing . they are the same from 72 to 87 and are different from 88 to 97.

Somewhere around 1988 GM ( or AA ) changed to a ribbed center section and started using a different pinion bearing in the pinion retainer . The large pinion bearing is larger on the newer stuff . You can use an older pinion support in a newer housing ( and visa/versa ) if needed .
