I read about that thing. The dude has a website. It's a 2.4l turbo charged minivan. He hauls the kids to the track in it, takes out the seats and races. Pretty friggin cool.
BOOST! Back in the late 80's, there was a guy that used to show up all the time at New England Dragway in Epping, NH that had one of the Turbo'd Caravans. He modded it to have crazy boost levels and just spanked the crap out of a LOT of supposedly fast cars. The thing looked bone stock, but it took off like a rocket!
When I lived in Cincinnati there was a guy who ran a VW Rabbit at the track. It was the original motor and trans, but he had tricked it out to the max. It outran a Viper and a Vette without trying. Sounded like a Bee on crack as it ran down the track.
12.6 @ 109 from what I could read at the end. IIRC he eventually got that thing into the high 10's with the stock bottom end and over 130,000 miles on it.
nuts, great for people who cut you off too
There used to be a guy that would come out to Firebird that had a crappy 60's vintage Ford panel van that had a 351 Cleveland that he bought out of a junkyard that would do the same thing.
If I remember correctly he had less than a grand into the whole truck.

They have a following. Looks pretty easy to make big power, most of them just put on a bigger turbo such as one out of a Powerstroke and slap some bigger injectors. I think they were able to push like 20lbs on the stock bottom end? Gotta be pretty embarassing to get beat by a old wooden paneled minivan full of kids.
Here is one of their setups and dyno sheet:
[*]all stock 2.5L bottom end, balance shafts removed
[*]lightly ported G-head plus .020" copper shim
[*]stock cam with 130,000 miles
[*]stock intake manifold with stock throttle body
[*]exhaust manifold lightly ported by Gary Donovan
[*]Garrett turbo off a junkyard Daytona (unrebuilt) with 2.25" downspout
[*]+40% injectors, adjustable regulator plus Cartech secondary regulator
[*]3" mandrel exhaust with cat and UltraFlow bullet muffler
[*]K&N drop-in filter in a TurboII airbox (no airbox-to-computer accordian hose)
[*]Turbo Action reverse pattern manual valve body
That last item is a crucial one. It allows me to begin near idle in third gear but when I floor it the trans stays in third without downshifting. Factor in 20 psi of boost--my daily driver setting--and this produces some interesting results:
so max TQ is 400FT LBS but it dropps like a rock after 2 grand?
This was a dyno sheet from I think 3 years ago. I dont know how easy it can be to get a cam and head for those things.
At any rate, running 12s in a minivan is pretty good. I like sleepers, but I dont think I would do this one.
There is something wrong with the link... This looks correct, but the link gets lost.
hmmm.....I edited the post because I messed up when I originally typed it and the link didnt change. Ahh well, try www.turbominivan.com
I can't believe that I am thinking about buying and building one of these.
