    More 14BFF ?\'s

Ok, I was told that you can get thick gears for the 14bff to fit in a 3.73 carrier. Is this right? Also with the thick gears, does it affect the install of a detroit at all?

    Thanks

They make thick gears for everything now so it shouldn't even matter.

The break is 4.10 and numerically lower, and 4.56-5.13 in the other carrier.

Thick gears are available to put 4.56s, 4.88s, or 5.13s where 3.42s used to be if that's what you want.

    Re: Quick question on 14bff

So if I have a 14bff with 3.73's then I only have to by thick gears to put in 4.56's? I don't need the 4.56 carrier, just the thick gears? Also is there any problems putting a dertoit in with the thick gears?

    Thanks

Yes, they make thick gears to fit your 3.73 carrier and no it will not effect the Detroit Locker. I have a 14FF, I used to have GM 4.56's with a Detroit in it and now it has aftermarket thick 5.13's (on a 4.10 carrier) with the same Detroit.

My Detroit was about 10 years old when I did the gear swap. While I had it out I turned it around so the less worn side of the axle gears would now become the primary side facing the axle - something to think about if yours is older.

No problems with installing a DL into the 3.73 carrier with thicker gears, BUT, make sure the carrier is the 4-pin carrier and not the 3-pin Gov-Lock carrier. If you have the 3-pin, you will need to purchase the 4-pin carrier to make the DL work.
