if I recall tho, the `election' was rigged, with just 1 person to vote for. if you showed up to vote, you could vote for him, or, risk the guys with the guns standing by the ballot box.

in that second article, what he said caught me as kinda odd:
    [ QUOTE ]
    --Saddam Hussein, December 24, 2000
Principles of Islam and the teachings of Jesus Christ make it imperative on us to take the road that satisfies God and our conscience...that is the road of Jihad (holy war)… Without Jihad we will not realize what we are hoping for in achieving peace and justice and saving humanity from the evils of the criminals, the murderers.

    [/ QUOTE ]

after reading that, I've come to the conclusion that Sadam Hussein is an avid plagerizer of Frank Herberts `Dune' series... (paul Mu'a Dib Atreades calling the Freemen to Jyhad was spoken almost exactly the same, )

quite frankly, I'm mostly just pissed that Arizona gas prices went from $1.10-$1.20/gallon in january to $2.03-$2.25/gallon today. the entire phoenix metro, is being collectively gangraped by the oil cartels, under the pretense of `we've gotta start jacking prices before the war, so that when it hits, we won't have to jack them anymore.' even tho I work at a gas station, I hope to high hell the state sues every last one of the corporations for Gas gouging, and actually Manufacturing Gas shortages. durring the winter months, state law requires us to use oxygenated gasoline... 2 of the 4 oxygenation refineries in the state shutdown 2 months early, leaving large supply gaps.... coincidence? gas type change over isn't until April 1... that's 2 more weeks for them to jack prices another dollar.

12 years? prolly.. but it was prolly a long time ago (betwen the war of 1812 and the civil war?). its no biggie. even peaceniks like france have deployed their military continuously around the world in the modern era. btw, france has sent troops into various african countries for decades since WWII... and not once have they asked the UNs or anyone elses opinion. talk about unilateral!

It's interesting that he was re-elected by 99% of his own countrymen...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yeah and the 1% who didn't vote for him got shot or shortly after disappeared.... besides it's not much of an election with one name on the ballot.....

    Cripes, I hope I didn't come across as a peace-freak antiwar hippy!!

I don't doubt the 99% election was prolly set up. I'z just sayin' is all.
On the twelve year without a war thing, a teacher of mine had said that to me during desert storm, and I promptly forgot about it. Then when I posted that, I had a sudden flashback of him saying that.

Heck, I'm pro war all the way baby!! Well, you know what I mean. I hope. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well, we kicked Mexico out in between those years. And I think there was a little squabble between the US and the Mormons in that time span. I'm sure there are more, but my memory fails me at the moment.

Couldn't have been Mormons since Joseph Smith didn't translate the BOM until 1830. So Mormonism came about well after this time period...

Y'all forgot the tussle with the Mexicans in the 1847 timeframe. I ran through my "Illustrated History of the United States Cavalry" last night. We pretty much had something going on all the time during the time frame, just not on the scale of today's actions. Mostly troop/squadron level engagements against whoever had a bad attitude during the time.
