My 89 has the four speed stick. Lately (last 6 months or so) when I come off the clutch a little hard something comes up and hits the floor pretty hard. Looks like it could be the transfer case itself. Since the tranny and transfer case mounts typically use gravity and don't prevent the drive train from rising, could it be a motor mount? It doesn't seem likely, but I'm running out of ideas. Anyone seen this before?

You'd be surprised how much the tranny can move when the mount tears. The engine mounts are captive in a metal clamshell but can also be loose enough to allow a lot of movement. I would set the hand brake and then SLIGHTLY engage the clutch while someone watches the driveline for movement. My guess is that one or more of your mounts are toast.
    Good luck,
    Mike
