About 8 weeks ago I saw a job posted on Waste Management's website for a FEL driver (what I currently do here in BC). Initially I was just curious about some of the details, so i applied to find out pay etc. I got a phone call a few days later from a recruiter in Chicago and had a good conversation with him. I was told to expect a call from someone more local in a few days.

A few days went by and I didn't hear anything, so I pretty much forgot about it. Fast forward to last week and I come home to a message on the answering machine from the regional HR person in Calgary. I returned her call and was told the follow up call I should have got didn't happen because the person that was supposed to make that call was "currently enjoying another opportunity" :haha:

Anyways, I had another good conversation with the lady from Calgary and she set up a proper employment interview by phone the next day. The following day i spent nearly an hour on the phone with a route manager in Edmonton. Many long essay answers later I was told they'd contact me the following week as they had a few more interviews to do. That was Friday.

Monday morning I get a call from the lady in Calgary again with a formal offer of employment. I was given my choice of 5 locations, and was also told they'd be covering the moving expenses up to $5000. Apparently they regularly use a relocation specialist who they be hooking me up with.

Tuesday I formally accepted the job offer. I'm tentatively starting my new job in mid April. The final date has not been set, and they are pretty much leaving that part to me due to the move involved.

I grew up in Edmonton, lived there until I was 10. Then we moved to BC and now I'm heading back.

    Right on man!
Always good to be "wanted" by employers.

Congrats Rene. 5 different locations, that's nice to be able to choose where to go. How's the cost of living in each location? Any pay diff between the 5 locations?

I'll be going ahead of my family, still looking at living options for that short term thing. Prolly gonna be a bachelor apartment. Rent in Edmonton is as high as it is here, but real estate prices are about 40% lower. Based on that i'll be pre-scouting houses for sale and we hope to just buy right away when the wife and kids head this way. Fuel prices are a lot lower, no provincial sales tax and I think the provincial portion of income tax is lower than BC's too.

It is, and I'm as wanted/liked at my current gig...I just can't afford to live here any longer. With my wife out of work we're moving farther into the hole every month...

Edmonton has a much stronger job market than we do here too. My wife has 28 years experience as an optical lab tech, but has spent the last year unable to find another job here after being laid off last March. 35 seconds perusing the Edmonton craigslist she found a job advert for an optical lab tech with finishing exp for $17-$19/hr. Should be a slam dunk for her...

I'm sure pay varied by location. The other location were all very small towns, two in Saskatchewan and three in Alberta. I looked into real estate costs as a major barometer of "cost" to live in each, then factored in all the other stuff and Edmonton was a no brainer for me. It really came down to potential opportunity for the rest of my family. i have one daughter turning 18 in a month. With a better employment market, good sized metro area and good schools she will have most everything she needs to continue life past high school there.

Real winter will take some getting used to though...for all of us.

Congrats man! I was thinking about you the other day, wondering how things were going at the Jelles household. That sound like a good deal for all of you. I'm looking for work right now and Waste Management has a few viable options atm...

Forgot to mention, I'll be riding the "spare board" for the first while. cover for guys that call in sick, take holidays, etc etc. That means I get to learn pretty much every route in the area. It's a hell of a way to learn a city inside and out in very short order...good thing I like a challenge!

    Thanks Luke!

My current biggest issue is finding affordable accommodations for a few months. Even a place to park my 17 foot trailer they want $700 a month for. :doah:

Obviously it's still early in the search, but it's the biggest stumbling block so far.

Albertan number 2 to greet you!

I grew up in the Edmonton area myself, well actually about 30 minutes East in Ardrossan...

Ditto on what Luke said, if there is anything you need, let me know! I may also be able to help with an apartment if you need a place in mid April...

Cargo trailer? Or camper trailer? What side of the city is their shop/baseplant on? I know a handful of good folks in and around there.

    Yup, POS camper trailer.

I'm pretty quiet, really just need a place to hang my hat til my house sells here. I'm open to anything really.

BRRR was Edmonton in the '70's. I lost count of the days I walked to and from school in -40.

Oilers do suck, but my Canucks go there 4 times a year at least...I'm not about to turn my back on 25+ years of being a Canuck fan. Usually plenty of Canucks fans at Rexall place when the 'nucks are there. I should fit in. :waytogo:

Yup, and I don't mind commuting up to approx 30 minutes each way.
