External shift linkage=no good for a truck. Internal shift parts, (Sm465, etc) it should be fine.

Nope it's a car tranny. Sure would be nice in my 70 LeMans /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
I know where a 465 4x4 tranny is for $100. Wish we didn't live on oposite ends of the country or I would make you a trade.
(hint: I would jump all over that tranny if it's in good shape....they bring between $300-500 depending on condition and what gear ratios it had around me)

Buy it and then sell it. Check out e-bay and see how much they are going for. You might be surprised.

Do some research on the Muncie M20, 21, and 22. Good luck with it being a real M22 though lol. You re on the right track for a Muncie with an Aluminum case. That doesn't identify it positively as a Muncie, but if its cast iron, it definitely is not an M-20/21/22.

FWIW, I believe the SM465 *is* a Muncie as well, but the whole "internal/external" linkage thing comes into play for ID there. Or check just about any tranny web site, "heavy duty" truck trannies are much different physically from car ones.

Dorian, SM stands for Saginaw/Muncie. If that tranny is out of a 4x4 it prolly isn't an M-21 and likely is a 465 or possibly a 420 if it's really old.

I can take a picture of a SM465 for reference If you'd like. I have one sitting on the side of my house. I don't have the time tonight.

IIRC the SM465 came out around 67 or 68. I guess that is on the edge of the mid 60's. If it's the SM420 it might be mated to a T221(?) case. Kind of an oddball set up. I would look for a SM465/NP205 combo. Look at some pics or take some & post them here.

sm420 has a big bulge on one side.
my sm465 has a cast in raised number starting with 465...

there is a few page article on rebuilding sm465 from a 4x4power magasine HERE along with a bunch of other misc articles I scanned
