Everything I have read states that GM put 30 spline axles in 89-91 Blazers, Jimmys and Subs. I went to switch the shafts out of my 88 into the donor 85 front 10 bolt and couldn't get them to fit. Pulled them back out and counted the splines to find out they were 30 spline, not 28 spline like I had thought. Needless to say I was a lil /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

Anybody else have an 88 that's like this?

I pulled my 88 rear axle a couple weeks ago to see what I had. They were 28 spline too.

Who cares? The 30 spline shafts are rare and worth more money. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Just sell them for two sets of 28s.

88's were mixed 28 and 30 spline. 89 they all went to 30 spline. If your front is 30 spline, then the rear most likely is, too.

I like the idea of having 30 spline axles a whole lot better than 28, they are actully a little bit bigger. However, the gears that I need are in the 28 spline housing/axle.

Hummm...I thought I saw something that said the stock carrier is a little weaker with 30 spline cuz they basically opened up the axle hole which weakened the carrier case. Most blown 10 bolts ive seen are the carriers or gears, not a broken axle.

The crappy thing is, the 30 spline axles still neck down to the same thickness as a 28 spline, so there is no strength increase.
Now, If you get a detroit carrier (Stronger than the stock one) and order the ORD 30 spline axles, you will have a strength increase over the same setup with 28 spline axles. Otherwise, no strength increase.

yep switchin the spyda gears would most likely fix that mess, or sell'n the axles, i have two axles from a 10 bolt 30 spline rear axle, might try to trade\sell them for some 12 bolt axles for spairs, since i already have spair front axles for my front diff. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

In all honesty, you will prb WANT to go with the 28. They are just a little easier to find. Do you not have any 28 spline shafts? If you need some, let me know, I've got a spare set or 2 in my garage, I'm sure we could work something out /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, I decided to put my existing frontend back in because the housing and axle itself was better looking than the one I was going to swap in. I will have to end up swapping gears anyway, so I will run 4.10's in the rear and see if I like it.

I have an '87 Suburban that has a 30 spline 10 bolt rear. I guess it could have been swapped in later, but there is no evidence that it was.

I've already told you how I feel about 4.10's and 35"-36" tires /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif but with the setup you've got now, you may feel like you're running 5.13's /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah, I'm gonna run this summer with 4.10's and if I don't like it then I will probably switch to 4.56's. A shop here in Tulsa called Young's 4wd is who I will go through, they are a really good shop.

I won't be an ass about Young's cause Billy Ray is a nice guy, but check over their work. Sean is a REAL nice guy as well and is building a pretty slick rockwell RHD scout in there. I had a little trouble with them a few years ago, but nothing that keeps me from going in there and talking with them today. Unlike Sam's /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

Good luck, let me know if you need any help, don't know how much help I could be, but I can be cheap hired help. I work for Pepsi /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
