    Take a look at this:

    Murphy First United Methodist Church

    Sanctuary Built: 1922

    Sanctuary Capacity: 275-300

I'm in the choir of this church, and have been attending it since I could walk! Currently in absentia from the choir however because of the chemo treatments, but I will be rejoining next month hopefully. Here's some interior shots.

Post up pics of the best one in your area if you've got 'em.

Anybody have pics of the chapel at the Air Force Academy? Saw it in person but my computer got wiped out. Awesome piece of architecture.

I recognize that church, seen it on TV, but can't place a name on it. Like to look up the specs on that organ. Looks like it'd have to be sounding on some serious wind pressure to fill that place.

I don't understand the big church thing. Why not meet in the local high school gym and put the money to a good cause?

Nor do I. But there are quite a few churches out there that are simply awesome examples of architecture.

I think that is what our pastor wants our church to look like, lol We are already like 120 000 in debt for rennovations, and he wants to do more :doah:

There are some pretty nice ones here... however, I don't usually take pictures of good looking things...

So here's a picture of the steeple on a local church, badly in need of some paint...

I'll try to remember to get some of the nicer ones around here... But from what I can tell they're just your basic old school churches... Mine doesn't require pictures... Just go take a look at your local LDS church, 99% of them are the same basic design...

Tell your pastor he needs to rearrange his priorities. How's the ministries and local community improvement projects going instead? If those aren't doing well first, then he's got no business asking for more sanctuary improvements until those are going excellent and making a beneficial difference in the community.

Some churches get so big, and have so many other events during the week that it's just not feasible to meet like that. Most very active congregations become small communities themselves, and a single dedicated building becomes essential.
We have a few large and well-architectured churches around here. I've always thought just about the same thing, though, that spending to make the building more impressive is kinda purposeless.
In spite of that, I do think there are some really impressive looking churches out there.

The church we're not really in but kinda participating in right now renovated a few years ago and added a huge section with lots of classrooms and a giant room for events. It basically looks like a single story office building, though. Just like the man at the center of it was a simple carpenter.

That's because the building has had no major structural modifications since it was built, other than adding in the organ and grille wall in the early 50's, and a disabled persons elevator replacing one of the stairwells in the 90's. Other than that, there's only been minor electrical upgrades and some light fixture replacements.

What you see is how it was built in 1922.

Something I forgot to mention though is that a separate three story, office-style building, just out of the pic to the left, houses all the Sunday School classrooms and the Fellowship Hall. It was built in 1966. The sanctuary's basement is now a Youth Center.
