    2.4ghz & 1024MB ram

Only 13GB of harddrive are taking up out of 40... what's the deal? Its pretty slow on startup, I think its Norton that causes that, and winamp takes forever to come up, but I have 4 playlists on that thing with 1000 songs or so total. Anyway to give it a little tune-up or free up some speed? /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

btw i've already done the obvious stuff, disk cleanup, defrag, gone through and deleted stuff from harddrive and startup menu, etc.

Tecton is right, stuff can be in the startup tab of msconfig and not be in the startup menu. Also check to see what goofy services are running that you don't need. Look in the services tab of msconfig.

    hmm
other option is to go into regedit and check RUN under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER...there also may be programs hiding there...

if you dont know how, click start -> run -> type REGEDIT
then scroll up to the top in your left side window and find the folders that say HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, click those and go to Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Current Version -> Run and you will see the program name and location in the right hand window

and if all that fails...buy more ram, or format

you would be amazed at all the things that may be running in the back ground, including trojans and viruses. Norton misses half the stuff that is around. Adaware is good but not perfect. Run Norton, Adaware and these

Download these 4 (do a search, they are free)
    1)Hijackthis(excellent program)
    2)Cwshredder(another good one)
3)Trojan Remover(get in addition to norton -trial on this one)
    4)Search & Destroy spyware detector(excellent also)

I shut down so much crap that was bogging down the pc, including stupid spyware.

    good luck
