My K5 Won\'t Turn Over

On my way home from work tonight I stopped for gas, got back in the truck, depressed the clutch, turned the key, and nothing! I cleaned the battery cable ends, cleaned the connections at the starter - nothing. I have lights and the horn works. Could this be the ignition module? It was dark by the time I got in so I couldn't explore any further. Any hints will be appreciated because I would rather build an engine then deal with the electrical!

DOes the starter click at all? First make sure you have full voltage w/ a multimeter. Your best bet would to get a test light and see if you have power to the starter... if you do try turning the key and hitting the starter mildly w/ a hammer and see if it turns over. If this works the starter is bad most likely if all the connections were good at the starter. If you have no power there I would look at the clutch saftey switch and ignition switches. The ignition module will not cause a no crank condition.

Thanks for the info. I did beat the starter- no go. No noise either, like battery or solenoid. The alternator is working fine. I tried to jump it (full well knowing that wouldn't work)! LOL I just have nothing when I turn the key. I did consider the clutch switch and will check that out first thing in the morning.

You might want to make sure all the wires are intact on the solenoid as well. You are right, electrical problems arer a b*tch. They can test you. Pick yourself up a hayes or chilton manual, they are extremely helpful.

Same thing for me and none of that, I had full readings at starter, the short was in wiring from starter to ignition, so low readings at input voltage to ignition, had to replace entire wire from starter to ignition input because I couldn't find the bad section of wire. A true bit(*&.

I didn't read too many of the replies cos my eyes are not working too well today, but did you check the safety switch on the clutch? Mine went bad on a truck I had years ago. I used a paper clip and black tape to fix it. My .2, hope that's all your problem is!

Try the battery cables themselves. Even if the ends look good stuff can start forming in the wire in the center and then make go crazy fixing it when it's a wire. I just went through this not long ago and it was the negative wire. It was corroded in the middle but I couldn't see it (under the tape that was around it)... replaced it and it fired right up. Cut open the wire and it looked like crusty old toothpaste inside... so no wonder it wouldn't start............

Just turning the key won't work. You'll have to get it on a serious sidehill, or try going over a really tall rock with one tire. I bet if you try hard enough, you can get it to turn over!!!

Re: My K5 Won\'t Turn Over

Thanks everyone I appreciate the input. I checked the clutch switch first thing Sunday morning - It had continuity. So I pulled the starter and off to the parts house I went. They tested it and it wasn't bad - IT WAS DEAD!!! I went home with a new one for free (I have a lifetime warranty) and in ten minutes I had it in and my baby was running! Thanks again for everyone's help!
