i get frustrated with myself sometimes, because i get irritated at the dumbest stuff. for instance, i've got this wheeling buddy who bought this mid 90s 4 runner. when he bought it, it was spooled/locked, d44's, 35" swampers, lots of armor, a winch, etc. pretty built. he's always so stoked about his rig, which (i know this is stupid) i think is cheap and stupid because none of his sweat and blood went into it. it is a pretty capable truck, but i just can't value it because he bought into it. it's his truck, so i'm glad he likes it, i guess. glad its not mine tho. :) can anyone identify with this stupid thought process?

Maybe cause it devalues the elbow grease you put into your own vehicle to see someone place the same value on the finished product that they didn't put any elbow grease in. Like taking credit for inventing the internet.

If I had the $$$ to spend I would have just bought a truck that is finished, but on the other hand I like adding custom touches here and there.

Yes, I know exactly how you feel, I've always been this way, it has to do with how I was raised. If it is valuable, you have to earn it, it can't get given to you...examples...surfing, I used a ripped wetsuit and a borrowed old board for the first winter...didn't get my own stuff until I had put my time in (actually, three years before I got my own board and that is a hand me down). Riding dirt bikes, I didn't get a brand new CR125, I got the hand me down DT100 that I had to fix all the time. Street bikes, I had a 1978 SR500 with 13.5:1 compression to keep up with the guys for awhile before I got the SV or GSXR...I don't have a bling bling truck I bought, I had to build it...(still ain't bling bling, except the skull shifter, but that actually fell off last weekend:doah: )

What did he have prior to this one. Had he built any rigs before? I ask this because I am on my third blazer, fifth rig. I build them and then sell them for one that has say a newer motor and make money off the previous one. And then it all starts over.

My current K5 was already built by another member and in better shape than mine. I call it an upgrade. Yeah I am still adding to it but not that quickly. Can I still take pride in my truck even though I did not put the 1 ton gear on it among some other things. I say heck yeah, but I give credit where credit is due. Besides I had already done that to another truck so my sweat equity is there just on another truck.:D

When I have some cash layin around, I'm gonna go look for an already built rig in good shape. It's the cheapest way to get a nice rig. Of course, you don't know the ins and outs of it, but that comes with time.

Every time I look at those pictures from Tillamook, or even think about Vinny, I just kind of chuckle and shake my head. My favorite was when he couldn't get up the hill. Because it wasn't in 4x.

I don't know, Ive done the build up thing twice and am in the middle of a third. If I decice to start again I'm getting one that is done/ paying someone to do it. Too much down time this way.

It doesn't matter to my who built the rig. What matters, is who maintains and repairs it.

It matters that you know what you have and how to use that vehicle. I have seen many less capable rigs make it through an obstacle piloted by drivers that know what they are working with while a dumba** with a large checkbook stood by scratching his head not understanding why his truck wouldn't make it.
