After going to a game this weekend, I still get shivers when I hear the National Anthem sung.
It PO's me though when they try to make it an audition for some crappy tv show. Like they put to much into trying to make an impression for somebody.
Just sing it. And then the crowd starts hooting and hollaring, which to me seems a little disrespectful to the song. I'm sure they do it in appreciation for the singer, but I like it kinda plain, but well sung.

yeah, i don't like wacky interpretations of the song either. For me, the Whitney Houston superbowl rendition (1991?) is just about as much "interpretation" as I tend to like... more than that it starts to suck. ;)

I like it plain. Some whistlin and hollerin towards the end always makes me feel good.

Even better is not sung, but played by a good orchestra. A good singer can do it justice as well. Please, keep your "artistic interpretations" to yourself when singing the anthem. I also find the whistling and hollaring to be very disrespectful.

i have no problem with some hollerin' / whistlin' once it ends... I imagine lots of Revolutionary War-era people did plenty of hootin'/hollerin' (along with the tossing of hats and shooting into the air!) when patriotic things were said / sung etc.

I gotta say that hearing the US anthem even pumps me up. Don't get me wrong I really love our anthem too, but something about the lyrics in your's makes my adrenaline start.

It's very low class but don't tell me you've never heard the American anthem booed. I have and it's ambarassing to be there. A few retards can sound like a lot in an arena. Back to the topic. All anthems should be sung without interpretation. Weird interpretations sound disrespectful to me. As for noise and cheering during the anthems, I like it.

That is total BS to do that at any time. FWIW my ring tone on my cell for Paul and Rene (and any future Canucks) is O' Canada. :D

I whole heartedly whistle and give a good "yeah" when its over, but I prefer to remain silent while its being sung, or played. And the right hand over heart, with the hat off too. I'm no singer by any means, but I lip sync the words all the way through too.
Any Jackass that boos a competitor anthem, shouldn't be there to begin with. Its a game....they deserve to have their country's pride and recognition acknowledged too.

I heard it played by a way talented electric guitar soloist and I kid you not. It brought tears to my eyes. I was singing it in my head and the wail of the guitar and whine of the cords just about took my breath away.

As for singing it. There is that one note, you know the one, near the end, when if the singer has the lungs they HIT IT... HARD... and hold it there. That's when the crowd goes crazy.

    I love that song.

When the national anthem is being played, shut the hell up and face the flag, with hand over heart. Stay that way till the anthem is completed. ANYONE who has been in the armed forces knows what the proper prootocol is. I HAVE and will continue to correct jackasses of both sexes who do not know how to behave.

Roseanne Barr did the absolute worst rendition of our national anthem. Hendrix did the best.

I agree, however, I really really do like when right at the end when the singer hits FREE... and jumps that extra octave and just belts it out... I really love when the crowd jumps in and cheers for the last 6 words. I would like to say that I can hold out through it all... but now that I'm not active duty, I can't help but holler at the end.

And for those of you that need a reminder... here is the whole song.

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave.
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And a LINK to a little history.

    And finally... the SONG

    One of the most CONTROVERSIAL

    One of the BEST

    And the WORST EVER

What Americans do during the anthem is really none of my buisness, But it sure is impressive when you guys chear all the way through the anthem at big hockey games. The old Chicago stadium used to shake. I've only experienced this once with the Canadian anthem and it was at the gold medal game for the world juniors (Canada vs Russia). It was awsome.
    Just my opinion.

AMEN! :angry1: Nothing boils my blood more than to be at a baseball game and the dumbasses are more interested in making as much noise as possible right after "The Land of the Free!" instead of paying respect to the song and flag.
