I was just given the opportunity to join the National Guard. I wouldn't need to go to boot camp or school, as I've already done it all for the Marine Corps. Its a great opportunity to get a $15,000 bonus (half up front and the rest over my 6 year term) or with a one year "Try it before you buy it" plan, the whole thing up front if I enlist for 6 years afterwards. I'd be an Armorer again, and the shop is about a half hour from my house. So my question for you guys, should I or shouldn't I??

Oh, and please don't just vote and leave... tell me your experience....

If you enjoy the job, I'd say go for it. National guard is a lot less BS than active duty, but still has plenty of it. Money is not bad, but you may spend a year in Iraq at the same time and the main reason the enlistment bonuses went up so high.

That's the one thing I'm not sure of... most of the Reserve units were already activated and came home... I don't know if the Nat'l Guard here was activated yet.... if they recently came back, I'm safe and likely won't haev to worry about it... but if they haven't yet, I may just wait. I have no problem going overseas... in fact, I'd love it... but my new Wife wouldn't be so keen on the idea, nor would my 5 year old...

Even with the war I wish I'd stayed in shap and gone guard or reserve. It's probably one of the few choices in life I regret. And Id be at 19 years right now.
