so we took the top off a 465 and cant seem to get all 3 forks back together with it actually shifting through all the gears. does anyone have pics of a manual or good with describing what we are doing wrong? what gear are we supose to try to get it into before we line everything up? thanks in advance.

Are you trying to put the whole top back on the tranny, or just the shifter? The tranny needs to be in neutral to reinstall the shifter after the top is in place.

If you're trying to install the whole top of the tranny, do you have the shifter removed from it? That should make it easier to line up the shift forks.

You have to have the shifter 1/2 way into reverse...Otherwise the reverse shft fork makes contack with first gear (or second, can't remember) on the counter shaft...If you take a light and shione it doen into the case, you can clearly see how it has to go...It can also be a bitch b/c that reverse idler gear slides around then you try to slide the fork over it...

Good luck... and if you are just talking about putting the shifter into the top cover, the tranny has to be in neutral (well it CAN be done with it in gear, but pretty difficult) and the stick sits b/w the two roll pins and the collar locks onto the roll pins when you push down and turn clock-wise...

thank you for your help guys, we finally managed to get the top plate and shoft forks lined up with the gears. the fork assembly is a bit wore, so shifter was kicking into 3rd gear instead of reverse. thanks again
